We get it: Tuxedos are intimidating, especially since you don't always get black tie invitations on our side of the world. If and when it does happen you should be prepared. So, we've put together tips for all the potential tux-wearing moments you'll have. From when to pull your tux out to the right shirt to wear, here's a quick and easy guide on how to wear a tuxedo.

Know when to wear a tuxedo to start.

There is such a thing as being too overdressed. So, showing up in a tuxedo isn't always the best idea. Once you learn the basics, however, you should be good. As the rules state, a tux must only be worn after 6 p.m. And if you see the words "black tie" on an invitation, that should mean you should turn up in a sleek tuxedo.

Fit is everything.

Like with suits, fit is everything when it comes to a tuxedo. Take a close look at the shoulder and see if it fits just right since that's the first tell. Ideally, it should be snug and fitted. The button closure should also be precisely at the belly button. Everything else should be standard as your other suits.

Always reach for a bow tie.

Black tie is really the best time to bust out your bow ties. Now, we're not talking about pre-tied clip-ons. Not only can people tell the difference, but it also brings down the sartorial value of your tux. Tying a bow tie is a worthwhile skill. Not to mention, it's easy and part of the whole process. Read our guide on bow-ties for more.

A tapered shirt is required.

Snug and fitted goes the same for the shirt. Choose a tapered shirt that fits just right because who would want bunched up fabric under your dinner jacket? Plus, a fitted shirt adds more sleekness to the whole look.

Trying to go for a dapper look? Go for men's pumps. It's what gentlemen back in the day wore, and it adds just a bit of flair, too. If you want to keep it more subdued, a nice classic pair of lace-up oxfords will do.

Well, not really. Keep it to a minimum with your choice of a cummerbund or vest, low-key cufflinks, black silk socks, and a white pocket square. It really only gets complicated with other accessories such as watches and boutonnieres. (FYI, the only appropriate timepiece is a thin silver watch with a black leather strap.)
