Who Is The Most Stylish Man Of 2018? Quarter Finals: Dev Patel vs. Tom Hardy

It's a best of British for the next big match-up.
Comments

Last week, Harry Styles claimed victory over Zayn Malik to reach the semi-finals. Who will join him?

We Brits are known as good dressers with a knack for style that is two-fold: We do traditional, classic tailoring better than anyone but we have plenty of rule-breakers, too. Unconvinced? Look to this week's style trial match-up of Dev Patel and Tom Hardy for proof.

Dev Patel Remains Classic

The former should really be in the running for 'most improved.' The sleeper hit of men's style in 2018, Patel has come a long (long) way from the hoodies and hi-tops of his Skins breakout, with a haircut and grooming regime that's elevated him from geeky child actor to Hollywood heartthrob.

Toronto Film Festival, for example, was Patel's finest hour. Hotel Mumbai's big premiere saw its lead star wear a timeless, sharp double-breasted two-piece in fail-safe blue, and utilized the 'air tie'the simple act of omitting neckwearto make his classic red carpet style more interesting.

Not for nothing has the actor been brought on as an ambassador by Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna alongside the venerable Javier Bardem.

Tom Hardy Takes Risks

Tom Hardy, meanwhile, takes more risks than his young peer. Instead of keeping it classic from head-to-toe, the Venom star takes minor risks for major rewards.

At the premiere of his latest flick in LA, Hardy upgraded a club collar and a three-piece with a lapel pin and pocket watch. Such details in tandem would be considered a step too far by the old school, but Hardy lifts the look and makes it his own.

It follows a wider pattern of rule-breaking too, with the 41-year-old unafraid to deregulate: We had all-white looks for Comic-Con, and a penchant for the semi-naked tracksuit in our very own Esquire cover shoot.

So, who heads to the semi-finals? Dev Patel, minimalist extraordinaire, or Tom Hardy, the man who refuses to take the easy path?
