Who is the Most Stylish Man of 2018? Round Four: Ryan Gosling vs. Ryan Reynolds
Annual best-dressed lists often make little sense. That's because a whole lot of backroom politics and planning go into them. So this year, Esquire is asking you to decide the Most Stylish Man Of The Year in a tournament for the ages... Last week, Armie Hammer claimed victory over Henry Golding, and we're in for an even bigger showdown in round four.
This week our best-dressed tournament turns to two men equal in stature, style and, well, name as 'Gos Amongst Men' Ryan Gosling and the man whose marriage has launched a thousand memes Ryan Reynolds go head-to-head.
How can you possibly decide between two men that so consistently put the rest of us to shame in the wardrobe department? Allow us to help.
First, to Gosling. A Hollywood heavyweight since 2011's stylish slaughterfest Drive, the 37-year-old launched his style credentials back then by cementing a scorpion-embroidered charmeuse bomber jacket as one of the most iconic jackets in movie history. No mean feat.
But this is about style moments in 2018—of which Gosling has enjoyed plenty. A prolific endorser of the 'air tie'—the simple red carpet move that eschews a tie within a formal look, ensuring the top button remains fastened—it's a look he brought back while promoting new movie First Man on the international film festival circuit in Toronto and Venice. Many of Gosling's contemporaries have copied, too.
The star's other signature move—also brought back with aplomb in 2018—is the sweater vest and denim jacket combo, which says ageing art teacher on paper but is far prettier in reality. This is because he wisely keeps on the quieter side of retro, with geometric knits and seventies palettes a plenty.
Then there is Ryan Reynolds, living proof you can be a 'Hollywood funny man' without dressing like a joke. Instead, think tonal tailoring, Ivy League two-pieces and one very sharp contrast waistcoat.
This year saw a serious upgrade for Reynolds on the back of a long haul Deadpool 2 marketing trail. Even when in-transit at Narita International Airport, the 42-year-old enlisted a textured suede jacket we've been thinking about since. It's a long way from his mid-nineties dyed blonde locks phase.
That piece has become something of a signature too. In New York, Reynolds was pictured in a similar foolproof outfit—a consistency which deserves recognition in itself. You'd be hard-pressed to name other esteemed gents that so regularly pull it out of the bag.
But as only one can emerge victorious, which Ryan takes your title for best-dressed?
