Holiday season is well and truly upon us. Which means that from now until the ball drops for 2018, you've got about eight million parties to go to. And while some of those will fall into the "ugly sweater" category, some are going to demand a little more from you, style-wise.

To give you an idea of what to do when the invitation reads "black tie" (or, worse, "creative black tie"), we dressed I, Tonya star Sebastian Stan in some of the season's best formalwear. The trick to really nailing the look in the anything-goes menswear moment we're currently inhabiting? Taking it easy. Lose the tie, keep the tailoring, and enjoy the celebration.

2| Of course, if you favor something a little more restrained, classic navy is tough to beat. Velvet's texture alone is enough to elevate you above the pack. Jacket, shirt, and trousers by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture; loafers by Tom Ford

3| Plaid isn’t just for flannels. The right pattern, plus the right cut on the jacket, makes for a look that’s equal parts bold and refined. Jacket, shirt, and trousers by Gucci

4| Jeans? Why the hell not? Lean into the rocker vibe of a skinny tux jacket by pairing it with black denim (and some heavily embellished shoes for good measure). Jacket, jeans, and shoes by Saint Laurent; shirt by Tom Ford

5| Earn your stripes with track pant-inspired detailing on your trousers. Just make sure to read the room. A look this adventurous is best saved for a receptive (read: fashion-savvy) audience. Jacket, shirt, trousers, and slippers by Gucci

6| You've probably noticed that there's nary a bowtie to be found in these photos. That's by design. When we said to take it easy and lose the tie earlier, we meant it—it's the easiest way to knock any stuffiness out of a dressed-up look right now.
