The Converse One Star Gets The Monotone Treatment From Engineered Garments

A simple but luxurious take on a classic via Japan.

Converse is really letting the One Star lead the way this year with several new colorways and special models released throughout 2017. The latest is a line of premium leather One Stars—in four monotone colorways, olive, navy, white, and black—created in collaboration with renowned Japanese clothing label Engineered Garments.

While they all look similar, the collection actually has four different iterations of the One Star, each with different renditions of the star logo: the Star Chevron, the Stars & Bars, and two variants of the regular star. It's supposed to be a statement about the versatility and adaptability of Converse's iconic staple. In this colorway, it's even simpler and easier to appreciate. The all-white colorway is especially tempting.

Daiki Suzuki, creative director and founder of Engineered Garments, explained his creative process for this collaboration:

“When [we were] approached with the project to work with Converse, the idea came from wanting to tell a bit of the history of the company, first and foremost. Chuck Taylor, for us, is a perfect shoe that we weren’t sure we could add or subtract to. It's remained almost unchanged all this time. The One Star—or rather, the iterations after the 'Leather All Star'—was a canvas [that] we thought could be mined to create something new."

"For Nepenthes/Engineered Garments, we have played around with the idea of twisting ideas together, creating negatives and positives in one pair of shoes. In attempting to create something new, we thought it would be best to start the relationship by revisiting the past and melding the first four models into one. Doing them all at once will have memories for some, seeing them come out when they did, and for others, it will be a lesson on how things can change subtly over time.”
