This Is How You Should Wear A Sport Coat

Do not be afraid of the one piece of clothing that can instantly elevate your style.

It can be intimidating, but the sport coat is really just another piece of clothing with the same properties as any other garment—fit, material, color, and wearability.

First, the fit and style

It should be snug on the shoulders and slim all throughout your body. For a more relaxed feel—which is really what you’re going for—choose a sport coat with minimal to no padding.

Next, the fabrics

Warm weather calls for lighter stuff such as cotton and linen, but in colder months, feel free to experiment with corduroy, suede, or lightweight wool. An interesting weave like herringbone gets you in the texture game.

Now, the colors

Begin your relationship with the sport coat in staple tones like gray, navy, and khaki. When you get a little more comfortable, move to more saturated hues: lighter and brighter tones for spring and summer (cream, dusty blue) and darker shades for fall and winter (olive, chocolate brown).

And, one more note

Once you have your sport coat on, forget about it. Just feel good in it. Here, four ways to wear the sport coat.

1| With a T-shirt

Ignore the dressed-up connotation of the sport coat and treat it as you would a more casual jacket. Wear it over a T-shirt. You can keep the T-shirt simple or try something graphic.  Both works. Just choose a sleek blazer in a dark hue for a versatile look that can go from day to night.

2| With a Sweater

It’s sweater weather, which is the perfect opportunity to add texture to clothes. Play up visual interest by layering tactile materials. Here, a blazer in herringbone weave plus a sweater with chunky loops.

3| With a Button-down

Dark blazer and light button-downthat’s a classic pairing you’ve been doing for ages. Step up your sport coat game with pattern and texture. Do a gingham shirt in this season’s rich colors and then, pick a navy blazer, made a little serious by a coarse weave, for a look that's both rugged and refined.

What’s life without danger? Reach for a coat in a hue you don’t usually wear like olive or coffee. Shake things up a bit more with a tricky shirt-and-tie combo. Stripes and checks? Yes. The trick? Make one print louder than the other.
