This Year’s ‘All-Star Game’ Jordan 1s Are The Right Kind of Flashy
We’re not even two weeks into 2018, and already we’ve got a new pair of sneakers to covet. The year’s first big Air Jordan release is a real stunner: the 2018 All-Star Game colorway of the Air Jordan 1 Retro Hi OG, featuring premium pebbled black leather, with gold accents and an ice sole.
This colorway has been dubbed the ‘City of Flight’ 1s, as this year’s NBA All-Star Games will take place in Los Angeles. The shoe directly references L.A. with its footbed, which bears a printed graphic of the city’s map.
Some have also pointed out that the ice sole could be a reference to Michael Jordan’s first All-Star Game in 1985, in which his Eastern Conference team mates—supposedly jealous of his success as a rookie—were said to have orchestrated a “freeze out” by ignoring him and systematically denying him the ball. Wearing the 1s, Jordan only shot two of nine that game, ending with only seven points, two assists, and three steals despite playing for 22 minutes. The freeze out allegations were never proven and have been denied, but remain infamous in the annals of All-Star Game history, and are considered by some as the catalyst for Jordan’s bitter rivalry with Isiah Thomas.
Apart from its commemoration of this year’s All-Star Game, this colorway of the Air Jordan 1 stands out for its luxurious details: the grain of the leather, the gold outline of the Swoosh, the clear sole. Gold is usually a tough color to deal with, when it comes to shoes—too much of it, and you risk coming off as pompous. But deployed in just the right amounts—as in these sneakers—gold makes a great accent color for adding a little flash. Available in Nike retailers, including select branches of Titan, P8,095.
