Vans Philippines commissioned artist Nikko Palaez to custom design five pairs of Vans, and the results are insane. These stylized kicks were designed to celebrate the city of Manila, as well as Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s 45th birthday.

Palaez used acrylic paint to custom design five pairs in total, with each one paying homage to one element of the city’s heritage and culture. A pair titled “Alab” features the familiar jeepney font, while another pays tribute to the butterfly sleeves of traditional Filipiniana dresses.

"Yung designs, pinaglaroan ko lang yung placing and composition ng fonts at mga illustrations sa sapatos," said artist Palaez, who added that the color scheme was influenced by the Philippine flag.

The most buzzed-about pair features Moreno alongside his slogan, Batang Maynila. Vans Philippines gifted the pair to Moreno on his birthday on October 24, along with a red velvet skatepark cake, alluding to the skatepark that Moreno plans to build in Paco, Manila.

Palaez got to personally hand the shoes over to the mayor, and was shocked by the mayor's impressed reaction. "Kita ko personally yung galak niya, and pinost pa niya or pinapost niya," said Palaez.

There’s only one pair of each design, and they won’t be released in stores. But according to the artist, “Malay niyo isa diyan ma-tripan nila i-mass produce.”

This isn’t the first time Palaez has collaborated with Vans. Check out some of his other dope designs below.
