Sneakers don’t always have to be conventionally attractive to be highly coveted. In fact, sometimes it’s the misfits and the left-of-center creations that become covetable as they start to bear a certain provenance. Case in point: these Nike Air Max 1s, which, by most standards are too far out there for everyday wear.

There are four different animal fur patterns on that shoe—all faux, so sit back down, PETA—and together they make a very loud statement piece that isn’t for the faint of heart.

But looks alone aren’t the selling point on these. They’re actually a tweaked reissue of a similar colorway from 2006, when Nike collaborated with Japanese sneaker boutique Atmos. The unique thematic audacity of that original 2006 release, as well as the fact that they were a recognition of Harajuku sneaker culture and one of the first boutique collaboration sneakers by Nike, gave them a story.

This year, to celebrate Air Max Day (which falls on March 26, but is generally celebrated through March), Nike is releasing the “Animal” Air Max 1 again, but with a black base instead of an off-white one.

The Nike Air Max 1 ‘Animal’ will be available at Commonwealth’s SM Aura Premier and Greenbelt 5 branches on March 17.
