When it comes to what to wear on your sojourn to swim with the whale sharks or explore the ends of the world (or, really, take a selfie under a cherry blossom tree), look no further than Atom Araullo, journalist, sometimes movie star, and Esquire cover subject

His job requires that he jump off an airplane, crawl under a bridge, or wistfully stare into a valley, all while getting the story. What he also accomplishes—and maybe not on purpose—is looking damn good while doing all these adventure-travel-reporting things.

His functional clothes are spare in design and yet provide visual interest. Bright colors, a close but comfortable fit, and details create a travel wardrobe that works but also pleases. Here's what he wears when away.

1| Pro tip number one: Do as the locals do—in this case wear red.

.

2| Bright colors are always good idea, because they allow your buddies or the adventure guide to spot you in the wild. (We are also digging this harness detail—which is an actual harness for skydiving.)

3| This surf look works because blue and green are happy neigbors on the color wheel. Also, that board.

.

4| What the best thing to wear on an adventure? A big ol' grin. Note also the full beard, a natural grooming move when away.

.

5| Atom knows not to look like a snowman when snowbound. Here, his heavy-duty layers remain trim.

.

6| Observe the graphic scarf, a stylish accessory that provides not only a point of interest, but also warmth.

.

7| You need one good coat for all your cold-weather trips to the cities of the world.

.

8| For warmer destinations, the short-sleeve linen shirt is your friend. Flowers, optional.

.

9| When you're carrying a giant tuna, a no-nonsense T-shirt would be the no-brainer thing to wear.

.

10| Atom channels the classic going-to-the-country look for riding: jeans, blue shirt, and brown footwear.

.

11| Proving that he is really a wanderer at heart, here is Atom “off the coast of Aurora” from 2005.
