When it comes to what to wear on your sojourn to swim with the whale sharks or explore the ends of the world (or, really, take a selfie under a cherry blossom tree), look no further than Atom Araullo, journalist, sometimes movie star, and Esquire cover subject

His job requires that he jump off an airplane, crawl under a bridge, or wistfully stare into a valley, all while getting the story. What he also accomplishes—and maybe not on purpose—is looking damn good while doing all these adventure-travel-reporting things.

His functional clothes are spare in design and yet provide visual interest. Bright colors, a close but comfortable fit, and details create a travel wardrobe that works but also pleases. Here's what he wears when away.

3| This surf look works because blue and green are happy neigbors on the color wheel. Also, that board.

7| You need one good coat for all your cold-weather trips to the cities of the world.

9| When you're carrying a giant tuna, a no-nonsense T-shirt would be the no-brainer thing to wear.
