Don't Let a Mask Be the Bane of Your Skincare Routine

Why every guy should keep one in his medicine cabinet.

Face masks are good. To get skin that doesn't break out, doesn't get irritated, or doesn't feel tight and dry, you might need more than just a face wash and moisturizer (which you do need, by the way). A face mask goes further to address the specific needs of your skin type. "Masks don’t have to be complicated or fussy," says Philippe Chantecaille, director of media productions at Chantecaille. "I wear masks while I’m sleeping, brushing my teeth, and when shaving to save time. They tackle targeted skincare issues with immediate and long-term results." Here are some of the most effective ones you can get.

1| St. Ives Gentle Smoothing

St. Ives is a great starter pick for first timers. This one uses oatmeal, which is known to smooth out skin.

.

2| Neutrogena Cleanser/Mask

Neutrogena makes a cleanser and mask combo for acne-prone skin. Use it as a face wash daily, or leave it on for a few minutes to double as a mask.

3| L'Oreal Pure Clay Cleanser

This mask comes out of the bottle like a thick clay, but it dries as a mousse, so it's easy to wipe off.

4| Garnier 2-in-1 Clay Cleanser/Mask

If you have oily skin, look for a product with charcoal in it; it's one of the best ingredients for clearing out clogged pores (acne and blackheads alike).

.

5| Baxter of California Clay Mask

If charcoal is too intense for your skin, try clay instead. It has similar pore-clearing capabilities, but is easier on not so oily skin.

6| Lab Series Urban Blue Detox Clay Mask

Lab Series' mask is blue. Blue! Use it once a week to keep skin clear.

.

7| Kiehl's Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask

This is about as easy as a mask can get. Kiehl's makes a hydrating clear gel mask that you leave on overnight. Use this if you have dry skin.

.

8| Origins Clear Improvements

Philippe Chantecaille also recommends multi-masking—using a different mask for different problem areas. Use an intensely clearing one, like this from Origins, on your T-zone, and use a lighter, more hydrating one on the rest of your face.

9| Aesop Parsley Seed

Aesop's products always offer a good balance for their respective purposes. This one uses clay to bring out dirt and aloe vera to keep the skin stay unirritated.

.

10| Chantecaille Healing Mask

Using masks consistently can have lasting effects—clear, bright (not dull or dry skin) for example. This hydrating one does just that.
