Almost all fashion houses have designer perfumes, those little vials of juice that promise to impart the magic of a French or Italian label at a fraction of the cost of, say, an embroidered coat, a leather bag, or even a sneaker. But not all houses receive critical praise, especially from perfume snobs, who feel (smell?) that modern releases are becoming more and more alike.

Top Story: What Happened to the Nobles of the Philippines?

The French fashion house of Christian Dior launched its first perfume, Miss Dior, in 1947, which was also the same year the designer upended the notions of fashionable dressing by introducing the New Look, a proposition of tiny waists and full skirts. Since then, the house has released men’s and women’s fragrances that follow the tradition of original thinking. Your wife might have J’adore on her side of the shared sink.

For men, Dior perfumes provide the opportunity to announce yourself even before you enter the room (and long after you’ve left the space). Some of its fragrances project power, others strength, some elegance, others mystery, and some a combination of any of the above with another. In other words, these are memorable scents that require caution. As with all concentrated formulas, you won’t need much to say what you mean.

Here we round up what we like best from Dior's portfolio of men's perfumes.

The French word sauvage means savage, wild, or untamed, but if we're going by the symbolism ascribed to the popular men’s fragrance by Dior, this brutality is tempered with magic. If Sauvage Eau de Parfum was a very specific moment, it would be the very specific window of twilight (the final light before nighttime) unfolding at a very specific place, the desert, in a very specific color, an inky blue.

François Demachy, the nose of Dior, translates the meeting of burning desert and cool night by opening with “a snap of citrus” care of bergamot and then transitioning into the smokiness of Papa New Guinean vanilla, which has been made potent by scalding. The result is virility, a kind of mysterious wildness symbolized by Sauvage’s spirit animal, a wolf emerging from the darkness.

Fahrenheit Parfum builds on the masculine character of the 1988 original, one of the bold scents that marked the decade of excess. But instead of going full throttle, the contemporary iteration chooses to accentuate what is already there. By combining burnt leather notes (a suede smell) and spicy Bourbon vanilla, it achieves strength and elegance. It’s bitter and sweet or boozy and sugary. This is not for the fainthearted. Fahrenheit Parfum opens strong and then lingers on the skin for hours on end.

Says Demachy, “Dior Homme Parfum is a composition with an unusual concentration for a men's fragrance. It ‘works’ on the skin and comes to life with an extraordinary intensity. It's a long-distance fragrance, a journey.” And with that, the perfumer expressed all you need to know about this leather fragrance.

But if you want a deep dive into the perfume, know that the perfect blending of noble ingredients makes it a standout. Tuscan Iris gives Homme Parfum a warm bread aroma, a comforting feeling, while Sri Lankan sandalwood and leather accords provide a caramelized note. Wearers describe it as opulent, dark, smooth, and, yes, powerful.

Actually, Sauvage started with Eau Sauvage in 1966, so if we are going to include the most popular Dior men’s perfume, we have to return to this (the two are not in the same family, however).

The modern version of the original citrus-fresh formula presents a richer mood by emphasizing the woody quality of vetiver. This is complemented by something close to home, the elemi from the Philippines. You might know elemi by its more familiar name, pili. The local ingredient adds a “peppery, lemony fragrance,” making Eau Sauvage Parfum warm and radiant, elegant and rich. Wear with a suit or pair with a vintage car.

Good to know: Dior Beauty, which handles the perfume operations of the label, has launched its home shopping service in Manila, so if you are in need of smelling good at home, just ring up the shop.
