5 Mens Haircuts That Will Be Cool In 2018
Sure, you've heard about all the 'New Year, New Me' lark, but you don't want to do anything drastic like commit to longterm self-improvement.
A new haircut, on the other hand, is the perfect way to change your life with minimum effort.
With that goal in mind, we spoke to Oran Lasocki and the Marylebone branch of Esquire favorite Ruffians Barbers to get a forecast of which celebrity haircut trends are going to dominate 2018, and what you need to tell your barber to get the look.
1| Cillian Murphy
"Cillian’s Peaky Blinders look is already a popular one, but for those of you looking for something more daring, I encourage you to adopt this heavy style known as the crop," Oran advises.
"When going into the barbershop or hairdressers, I would advise you to bring in a picture of the haircut to show your barber the look you are going for. Knowing how severe you want the disconnection from the top, to the back and sides, is something you’ll want to take into consideration. Typically, you would be looking to have a very high grade 0.5, into a 1.0 to get this style, but you can change it to something you’re more comfortable with if need be."
2| Matt Smith
Oran points out: "Matt is well known for his role in Doctor Who, but we will be discussing his recent hairstyle in the hit TV show The Crown, a classic longer length side part, for those of you looking for something more traditional."
"When choosing this style, you are going to need a good few weeks of hair growth on the top, back and sides. Ideally you would want the back and sides to be long enough that you can sweep them behind your ears. You will be looking for tapered sideburns, and some clean tapering around the hairline and at the nape, as this takes away any unnecessary length that will make the haircut look unkept and potentially messy."
3| Joe Keery
"Joe went from our beloved bad boy to our desirable sweetheart in the hit TV show Stranger Things, his hair only got better throughout the show, the scruffy side part."
Oran says: "For this style, you are going to need a lot of length to make a real go of it. You want to ensure your barber or stylist knows that you are going to be growing your hair into this style, it will help if you provide your barber with a picture as reference to help them understand your long-term style goal. This hairstyle needs a lot of texture, to avoid appearing like you have a solid block of Lego hair! Your aim is organized mess."
.4| Tom Hardy
"Tom has had many daring haircuts, but we will be focusing on the look from his role in Taboo," Oran says. "This cut is another crop; however, it includes some additional details."
"Like Cillian Murphy’s haircut, Tom Hardy’s crop includes some interesting features rendering it slightly edgier and more appealing to those looking for something different. The fade will be a high skin fade, this will make the top look longer and will ensure the texture is noticeable, but not too long. The fine line detail is known as a cat scratch, which adds a great deal of character to the style."
5| Justin Timberlake
"Justin has always been able to bring sexy back no matter what he does with his hair, going from noodle curls to a classic side part," says Oran. "With the announcement of his upcoming album Man of the Woods you can see him rocking a buzz cut—a classic style for any occasion."
"When requesting this style, you would want to ask for the top of your hair to be taken down to a grade 2.0 or a 3.0. Following on from this, you might want to ask for low grade 1.0 for the back and sides to taper out your hairline and create a gradual fade from the top to the bottom of the head. This will keep your buzz cut clean and tidy."
