Movember is here. It's time for a mustache or a big, bushy beard, like the one exhibited this week by actor Jamie Dornan

At the LA premiere of his latest flick A Private War, the Irishman nailed the formula for the full beard. It's thick, but not untidy; preened, but not overtly so, and, more important, it looks natural.

Sure, you need a good dollop of testosterone/genetic luck to get your own. But there are a few ways to stimulate and maintain a handsome beard ahead of the cold snap. Read on.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: A good scrub should be part of every man's grooming routine. Not only will a natural, microbead-less formula keep you glowing like a holy infant, it'll also remove dead skin cells to make way for new hair growth. Aesop Purifying Exfoliant Paste, aesop.com

2 Look Out for Peppermint and Eucalyptus

Peppermint and eucalyptus are two active ingredients that smell very, very nice. But these essential oils aren't only kind to the nostrils of passers-by. Research by the Korean Society of Toxicology found strong evidence that both promote hair growth without risk of an allergic reaction, and that thinking extends to your face, too. 3 Supplement Your Diet

Some vitamins can boost beard growth. Magnesium is one such supplement. Found in kale, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and sunflower seeds (so basically all the stuff you don't really want to snack on), a deficiency has been linked to hair loss. So eat more of it. 4 Maintenance is Just as Important

Say you already boast a fine looking beard: lucky you. Just as crucial as growth, however, is maintenance. And that makes a decent trimmer essential. Look out for multiple lock-in length settings so you've total control over thickness and style. Then, remember to keep edges tidy and remove any unsightly neck hair (anything south of the line where your head meets your neck is a good guide). Philips Vacuum Beard Trimmer, philips.co.uk
