The 'Don't Call It a Skincare Regimen' Skincare Regimen For Men

If you think fussy, complicated (as in, more than two steps) skincare regimens are for women only, think again. “Men need skincare routines the way women do,” says dermatologist Dr. Windie Hayano, managing director of The Skin Inc. Dermatology and Laser Center. In fact, she claims the biggest mistake men make is equating sunburn and acne scars with being macho, when really, who wouldn’t benefit from a little extra care? “While it is okay for men to have a few more wrinkles, aesthetically speaking, totally neglecting skin altogether is a terrible idea,” she says. The good news: Your girlfriend’s extensive product arsenal is not off-limits. Dr. Hayano thinks you could even benefit from raiding her stash, but most important of all is that you get a routine and stick to it.

First: Cleanse

Aside from getting rid of grime, it prevents bacteria buildup and unclogs pores. Lather up for no more than a minute as over-scrubbing strips skin; mild products like Cetaphil or Dove White do the job.

Next: Tone

Far from drying skin out, toning is meant to replace moisture lost during the cleansing phase. If you’re acne-prone, look for formulas with salicylic or glycolic acid. If sensitive, avoid alcohol, scents, and color.

Then, Moisturize

If you’d rather serums and lotions, that’s fine, but if you’re normal to oily, look for retinol, antioxidants, and hydroxy acids. “Men tend to have oilier skin, but they can also have extremely sensitive skin, which may require special attention, so it really is best to see a dermatologist,” Dr. Hayano says.

Last: Protect

Sunscreen should be at least SPF 20. Make sure to apply 30 minutes before stepping out into the sun, re-apply every 80 minutes (more so if you’re swimming or sweaty), and look for products that cover both UVA and UVB (Dr. Hayano likes Tizo and VMV). If you’re acne-prone or oily, give gels or sprays a try, while physical sunblock like micronized titanium or zinc oxide are best for sensitive skin.

Again, the important thing is to get into the habit. Soon, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Any woman would back this up.
