In 2002, French luxury house Louis Vuitton launched a fresh proposition for the thing on your wrist that lets you know if you have enough time for a coffee run before the big meeting.

That was the Tambour, the singular watch with a drum-shaped dial and the first timepiece by the brand. It was a hit, not just among the lovers of arguably the most famous logo in the world, but also among watch fiends, who quickly discovered that Louis Vuitton was not playing around. In the years that followed, the label created a new movement, the Spin Time (with its rotating cubes), established a watch center, La Fabrique du Temps in Geneva, and also received the Poinçon de Genève, a most valuable certification awarded to fine watchmaking.

Now, at the close of the year, Louis Vuitton continues its remarkable watch journey, adding two sporty Tambour models inspired by the masculine Damier canvas. The new wrist candies are here to entice you and, more important, dare you to be bold.

Color is the first thing you notice about the Tambour Damier Graphite Race. An acid green, which references the playful palette of men's artistic director Virgil Abloh (see the cartoon-infused spring/ summer 2021 set), becomes even more pronounced against the blacks and grays of the Damier canvas dial.

This fluorescent color appears on the most evocative parts of the watch, the “V” for Vuitton on the dial and the label’s name on the rubber strap. And if you want even more of the highlight color, a green rubber strap is also available and can be easily applied via the strap system common to all Tambour watches (this requires no tools to manipulate).

The Damier Graphite Race comes in two versions: a 41.5-mm diameter automatic model and a 46-mm diameter chronograph.

If you require a more conspicuous ticker, the Tambour Damier Cobalt Chronograph is the choice. Instead of a green snaking its way all over the timepiece, the highlight color—a lively azure—is set only on the seconds hands of the watch.

Nevertheless, the model draws attention as it is a study of balance and composition. Observe: The Damier Cobalt, in a subdued blue, is the springboard for this model and serves as the background of the dial. On it, a graphic “V,” thick and large, serves as the focal point, a graphic punctuation. And on that, the three chronograph counters plus the skeletonized hours and minutes hands are masterfully arranged.

Two versions of the Damier Cobalt Chronograph, both in steel, are available. The first, which is dressed in white and red and complemented by a rubber strap, is sportier. The second, covered with midnight blue PVD coating and adorned with pink gold accents, is dressier. Both are driven by a self-winding movement that is visible through a sapphire crystal case back. And all mark their wearers as men who value sport, innovation, and style.
