Don’t sleep on Makina, the independent watchmaker that has been quietly turning out handsome tickers since 2016. The Manila-based, family-run, and creative-led company has produced four models, each with its unique flavor and all very elegant (we’re partial to the ivory-faced chronograph, the Cassiel), to date.

This season, Makina is set to introduce a fifth model, the Uriel III. Founder Danilo Villanueva shared a preview of the upcoming watch with Esquire Philippines. “The angel has a new face,” he says in his message. “It is a tool watch for doctors and a sporty dress watch for everyone else. It features a dial with a pulsometer that helps calculate the heart rate of a patient.”

What’s a pulsometer, you might ask. It’s the scale that circles the exterior of the dial or bezel (in Uriel’s case, it’s on the face), and using it to assess your heartbeat per minute can be quite the process. Villanueva knows this, clarifying that the Uriel III is “a tribute to a tool that has been used for decades in the medical field” and not a replacement for more accurate measures like those found on a smartwatch or your doctor's brain.

In other words, you can just wear the handsome devil (or angel) because it is a handsome devil. The Uriel III comes in three colors, a watery blue, a chocolate, and a clean white, with big numeral indicators for the hours—12, 3, 6, 9—instead of the previous Uriels’ bars. “There is no doctor's watch that looks like this out there,” he adds.

For now, only 500 pieces of the Uriel III will be produced. And if you are a frontliner, Villanueva shares Makina is set to launch a giveaway of the new doctor’s watch and other models, too. Pre-orders start this month.
