A Rare Rolex Daytona John Player Special Sold for P78 Million, Setting a New Record for Online Auctions
Today in things that we'll never be able to afford: Sotheby's has just broken online auction records for a very rare Rolex Cosmograph Paul Newman ref. 6264 "John Player Special" watch that just sold for £1,215,000 (approximately P78 million). That's a lotta money.
The watch was estimated to go for P20 to P40 million, but it went way past that after 17 bids. Natural pandemic behavior, you know.
Named after the legendary 1970s Formula 1 livery, the model features a black and gold "Paul Newman" dial.
According to Sotheby's. the outstanding sale was due to the fact that the Daytona John Player Special doesn't quite often appear for sale. That and because only about 10 pieces of the watch in gold are known to exist.
"The Rolex reference 6264 is considered as the ultimate evolution of the pump pushers Daytona," Sotheby's said in a statement. "Indeed, these pieces are usually the treasure and the cornerstone of a few of the most distinguished private collections. They represent the ultimate achievement in the quest of the vintage Rolex Daytona watches."
Sotheby's even throws in the fact that the exceptional Rolex is called iconic and ultimate, while being a holy grail for collectors. So, it's only fitting it broke auction records for a watch sold in the U.K., as well as a new record price for a watch sold in an online auction.
