No stranger to the list, Cunanan of Bad Saint has been nominated under the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category for the third consecutive year. As they say, third time's a charm, and he finally takes home the title! His win was announced at an awarding ceremony hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson on May 6, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. “Good Food for Good” is the theme of this year’s James Beard Awards.

Before this award, Tom Cunanan has had his fair share of culinary recognition. In 2016, The Washington-based restaurant Bad Saint took second place in Bon Appetit’s annual list of America’s Best New Restaurants. The following year, Cunanan earned his very first James Beard nomination for his work at Bad Saint, which has consistently served refreshing new takes on traditional Filipino recipes.
