Filipino Cuisine Takes Center Stage In This San Francisco Night Market

It’s been a long time coming but Filipino cuisine has finally gained its due. After a prediction by Bloomberg, call-outs by travel-food hosts Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern, and the indubitable success of Filipino restaurants on the world stage, it’s clear Filipino cuisine is on its way to becoming world food.

Now comes Undiscovered SF, an innovative night market that's pushing the food movement further by celebrating both Filipino cuisine and culture. Stationed at San Francisco's Old Mint Building, the festival covers 94,000 square feet of space indoors and outdoors with fifteen rooms solely dedicated to art, music, food, and dance.

Inspired by the night markets of Asia, the festival benefits the SOMA Pilipinas district and takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight on the third Friday of every month. The first installment of Undiscovered took place earlier this month and featured Bay Area rapper Lyrics Born, LA-based musician Low Leaf, dance crews Young Skull Club and the Chapkis Dance Family from NBC’s “World of Dance” with food by the likes of Frozen Kuhsterd, No Worries, Hookt Doughnuts, Señor Sisig, and Mestiza Taqueria.

"Undiscovered SF celebrates the rich legacy and diverse arts and culture of Filipinos and aims to support and cultivate emerging Filipino artists and small businesses to help build economic opportunities for our community," Raquel R. Redondiez of SOMA Pilipinas told Inquirer.
