Sweet and Spirited: Globe Platinum Holds a Cognac and Chocolate Pairing Workshop for Father's Day

Father’s Day tends to fly under the radar most years, because let’s face it: dads aren’t usually the type to want to celebrate themselves. And when they are, all they really ask for is dinner out and maybe a thoughtful necktie.

This year, however, Globe Platinum, found a meaningful way to celebrate Father’s Day, outdoing its Whiskey Night from last year. Enter the Globe Platinum Cognac and Chocolates Pairing Night. As an homage to your old man’s appreciation for the finer things in life, Globe Platinum hosted an exclusive online workshop to welcome dads into the world of exquisite cognacs.

In the weeks leading up to the event, Platinum blue boxes were sent to participants’ homes. These contained a tasting glass, three mini-bottles of Remy Martin’s signature cognacs, and a selection of award-winning Malagos Dark Chocolates.

Then, on June 19, the virtual event opened with a well-lit bar lined with various multi-colored liquor bottles. Behind the bar, host Kevin Charuel, Remy Martin House’s brand advocate, warmly welcomed participants to the night of tasty pairings. He also introduced Remy Martin House’s portfolio of eaux-de-vie cognac blends before moving on to the pairing workshop.

The first part was a Cognac Taste Test. Here, Charuel guided participants as they tried three Remy Martin cognacs—the best-selling VSOP, the Club, and the XO. Participants took whiffs of their drinks before swirling them in their palates. Afterward, they identified each cognac’s distinct aromas and tableau of flavors, like the VSOP’s summer-y notes, the Club’s spicy flavors, and the XO’s progressive layers of plums, figs, and candied orange, among others.

A sweet experience followed as the host and participants took part in the Chocolate Taste Test. Charuel provided a walkthrough on chocolate appreciation—from noticing each variant’s appearance to listening to its crispness when you break off a piece, and finally melting a piece in the mouth to complete the gustatory experience.

Next, putting the two together: the Cognac and Chocolate Pairing. Cognac and chocolate have always been an indulgent, sensual pairing. The rule of thumb: the darker the chocolate, the older the cognac. Charuel then guided participants as they paired each cognac with either a 65 percent, a 72 percent, or an 85 percent Malagos dark chocolate.

The night indeed was about indulging in the two together, and how they elevate each other’s tasting profiles—like how the XO can calm the bitterness of an 85 percent dark chocolate with its complex yet sweet hints of dried fruits, floral notes, and spices.

A Fine Experience for a Worthy Cause

Beyond the event’s aim to provide a delicious treat for fathers on their special day, it was also meant to give an opportunity for good will. The Cognac and Chocolate Pairing Workshop took place on the one-year anniversary of Globe Platinum’s #ForFutureHeroes program. Like the previous year, this program invites Platinum members to join virtual experiences based on their passions and interests, and for every participant, one World Vision school kit is given to the children of Baseco Compound, Manila.

As of this writing, 2,700 World Vision School Kits have already been raised, and a portion has already been distributed to children in Benigno Aquino Elementary School and Hermenegildo J. Atienza Elementary School.
