The Daily Life: Gorgeous Interiors by Gert Voorjans
I love the city of Antwerp. Everything about it is elegant and cosmopolitan but at the same time it somehow successfully maintains its cozy, small town feel, and always, manages to remain grounded and real. Antwerp-based Belgian designer Gert Voorjans, one of AD Collectors best designers of 2016 embodies everything that I love about his dear city, from his charm and his grace to his style and flair. I must say I am a true fan.
The master of mixing, as proclaimed by the Wall Street Journal, Gert is as skillful as they come, and then some. Renowned for his work with fellow Antwerp-based fashion designer Dries van Noten on his retail boutiques and shop-in-shops around the globe, along with high-profile residential projects that include the homes of Mick Jagger and Nina Garcia, Gert's innate ability to simultaneously layer and balance textures, cultures, and eras in spaces large or small makes him one of the most fascinating and sought-after interior and architectural professionals of his generation.
The designer of the much anticipated, members-only Manila House was in town last week to promote his second book, Daily Life, which showcases 10 of his previously unseen residential projects, all of which are absolutely gorgeous—absolutely Gert. Published by Lannoo, with photography by Tim van de Velde, text by Thijs Demeulemeester, and a foreword written by none other that the fabulous Hamish Bowles, his new book clues us in on his design process and discusses where he finds inspiration and how he parlays that into his very own eclectic and exuberant style. The reception to the book has been nothing short of amazing. In New York City, the world renowned and ultra chic bookseller, Rizzoli, dedicated one of its December windows to Gert’s new tome and hosted a book launch earlier this month for him.
A must-have for every design enthusiast, the large-format, 256-page hardcover book begins each chapter with a map and overview of where the residence found on the next few pages is located, to provide context for each project. Gert shares, “ I make my clients involved in the process because I tell them that it is their home, not mine, and they need to love what we are doing.”
Truly a designer after my own heart.
