She Shed—the term sounds unusual but you’ve probably heard it before.

It’s basically the brighter, more floral opposite of the Man Cave. This private haven may take up a plum spot in a lush garden, and may be the perfect place for you to retreat to for solace. What would you do in it? Whatever you please: Curl up with your books, crochet to de-stress, down some rosé in peace, or take up that new hobby that you’ve been wistfully wanting to do for years. Like the Man Cave, the She Shed may also be a trove of your valuable collections and prized possessions tucked away or displayed for visitors to see.

The most important part of establishing a She Shed is determining its purpose. It could merely be an extension of your living space, a mini library, or a craft central. Its point is for you to embrace a hobby that’s important to you. Once that’s done, you’re free to decide on the style, the color, the furnishings, and the adornments.

To help you get started, here are a few ideas:

The Exteriors

Let the natural light shine through glass panels on the walls and ceilings.

The shabby chic route looks great, too.

Instead of a repurposed garden shed, have your little haven built poolside.

Don’t let the insides of the shed restrict you. Have your own patio outside it as well.

Just think of it as the dollhouse of your adult dreams.

The Interiors

Make it a homey space. Keep a sofa, daybed, or even a hammock inside.

Set up a proper workstation on one side.

For those with green thumbs, let a garden shed stay true to its original purpose and do your potting and planting indoors.

Transform your She Shed into a painting studio, away from the distractions of the world.

Use fairy lights to illuminate your workstation and keep pegs and inspirations clipped to the walls.
