The Supra holds a special place in the heart of Toyota Motors Philippines president Satoru Suzuki. In an interview during the launch of the all-new Toyota Supra in the Philippines, Suzuki said he had owned a third generation Supra when first joined the company back when he was still based in Japan.

“I was 24 or 25 years old,” he told Esquire Philippines. “I had it for around three or four years.”

Suzuki also reminisced about his best memories with his old Supra.

“On the highway, in Japan, there are speed limit regulations, just 100 kilometers per hour," he said. “But of course, the Supra can perform more (than that), up to 170 to 180. So actually, (there were times back then when) I was violating the speed limit. But at high speed, the performance of the Supra was very, very excellent. I have only good memories with that car.”

Suzuki was joined at the launch by many of the executives of Toyota Motor Philippines, including Vice Chairman Alfred Ty, who admitted he’d always wanted a Supra when he was growing up.

“I did want to have one,” he said with a smile. “But I had a Celica during my college days. That’s the younger brother of the Supra. I didn’t have the real Supra.”

Ty had the chance to drive the all-new Supra and said he was quite impressed.

“The response and power is quite strong,” he said. “It’s exhilarating. But even at low rpm it can take off already, you don’t have to wait for it. It’s a great drive.”

The Supra is Toyota’s sports car that was first introduced in the late 1970s. Already in its fifth generation, the all-new GR Supra comes with a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine capable of an output of 335 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.

As for the price tag? It depends on the color. The Supra starts at P4.990 million if you want it in Prominence Red. It then goes up to P5.050 million if it’s any of the following colors: Lightning Yellow, Deep Blue Metallic, White Metallic, Silver Metallic, Ice Gray Metallic and Black Metallic. The priciest model is Matte Storm Gray, which you can take home for P5.090 million.

“It’s a big deal,” Ty said about the launch of the Supra in the Philippines. “It was such a great car to have back the in 1980s. Of course, it had to retire, so for it to come back with the Supra name, it means it has a strong following. And now it’s not coming back just for display. It’s part of the lineup of Toyota. That just means Toyota Japan recognizes our country to have that capability to enjoy driving a Supra.”
