Car launches are usually splashy affairs in fancy venues: lights, music, food, drinks, the works. On Thursday (May 21), Ford dispensed with all of that and unveiled a new variant in its Everest lineup with everybody’s favorite messenging tool these days—a Zoom call.

Ford Philippines managing director PK Umashankar led the affair which was low-key but well-attended. Almost 100 people—journalists, dealers, even bank representatives—attended the virtual event.

“I believe it’s already been said (elsewhere) that there would be a 20 to 40 percent industry-wide (downturn) because of the pandemic,” Umashankar said. “We understand these issues, which is why we’ve been careful about the price positioning of our new products and not charge at all for all the enhanced content (features).”
