How the Land Cruiser and Hilux Evolved Without Losing Their Character
Automotive heritage is built through proven quality, owner trust, real-life experiences, and the freedom to choose a vehicle that continues to serve changing needs.

There’s a unique tension when it comes to updating legendary vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Hilux: people expect change but the vehicle's essence, its soul, must be intact.
The tangible, mechanical identity and proven capability must endure but at the same time adapt to stay relevant in a world that’s been changing at a dizzying pace lately. New tastes, new technology–which ones should a classic concept meet first?
It’s this duality-of-man scenario that Toyota must solve every time it updates its icons.

Sustaining that familiar quality, support, innovation, and relevance with every generation is what drives people to continue choosing Toyota throughout the years. After all, loyalty isn’t earned through a nameplate simply existing long enough.
And at the recent Toyota Legacy Experience, the way they’ve pulled it off for decades was shown in the most tangible way possible for the Land Cruiser and Hilux: in the metal, for the fans, by the fans.
The Land Cruiser HEV Expands Its Definition of Adventure
Toyota’s longest-running nameplate that has been produced since 1951, the Land Cruiser is the definitive SUV that could challenge sportscars for a spot on your bedroom wall (and later, phone wallpaper).
Gerald Lim of Land Cruiser Club of the Philippines, for his part, describes the SUV as "more than a car." He explained, "As a long-time owner, the phrase 'Anytime, Anywhere, We Love Land Cruiser' isn't just a slogan—it is a way of life. Growing up, the Land Cruiser was always part of our family, and today it serves as my dependable daily driver.
"What keeps it relevant across generations comes down to a few timeless qualities: reliability and parts, safety and security, and the lifestyle built on trust, adventure, and memories. It's not just a vehicle I rely on today—it is an heirloom I can proudly pass on to my son."

The beloved rides of said Land Cruiser fans were shown off with the legacy display and accompanied by two new family members: first is the all-new Land Cruiser FJ, an endlessly customizable younger brother that is built for both daily driving and trail hunting.

Described by Sherwin Chua-Lim, Senior Vice President of Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation's Marketing Division, “It combines the classic, rugged aesthetic and boxy silhouette of iconic past models—like the FJ40—with a modern, agile, and compact form factor. This makes the authentic Land Cruiser experience more accessible without sacrificing its core structural integrity.”

Toyota’s emphasis on user personalization for the Land Cruiser FJ reflects their belief of mobility according to individual needs. And if said needs include putting your own touches on their design, then go ahead by all means.

The second evolution is the Land Cruiser HEV, a significant step that brings electrification to the 10th generation without compromise.
“The introduction of the Land Cruiser HEV represents a modern step toward Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality. It proves that electrification can coexist with the Land Cruiser’s off-road capability and legendary durability.” explained Chua-Lim.
To achieve that, the hybrid system is integrated directly into the HEV’s heavy-duty ladder-frame architecture–instant torque and power delivery uncompromisingly meshed with the Land Cruiser’s rugged identity.
Brand trust is also well-illustrated by the Land Cruiser and its various iterations: the customer’s central need for a robust SUV is met with several different tech and powertrain options.
The Hilux BEV Opens a New Pickup Chapter
If there was one word to describe the legend of the Hilux, it would be “invincible.” Even the first-generation model from 1968 was on full display at the event—fully functional and in great condition.

“It’s a reliable heavy-duty utility vehicle, but also great for off-roading and overlanding adventures, making it a flexible partner. It has diverse uses, which makes it a popular choice for Filipinos who want more out of their car,” is how Chua-Lim summarized the Hilux.
Hilux Club Philippines member Atty. Bam Oquendo added, "I believe the Hilux has remained relevant because of its reliability, durability, versatility, and capability to adapt to different lifestyles and generations of owners. It is not limited to one type of driver or one kind of lifestyle. It can be a daily vehicle, a workhorse, an adventure companion, or even a means to serve communities. As our needs change, the Hilux continues to grow and adapt with us."
The new generation’s tough yet agile look is our first taste of the “Cyber Sumo” aesthetic–harkening to a stable stance with a strong core.

Behind the radical front fascia is a slew of upgrades to keep up with the times such as electric power steering, chassis adjustments, and tech like myRemote App connectivity. To maintain the Hilux’s bulletproof reputation, the strong core of a ladder-frame, 4x4 capability, and robust suspension remain.

The delicate mesh of familiarity and change is preserved even with the introduction of a full BEV variant, a new era for the truck. Hop into the cabin, do the test drive, and it feels as solid and reliable as the OG Hilux from the first minute–the novel sensations of the EV drivetrain actually come afterwards.

It’s also important to note that BEV and ICE coexist on equal footing in the Hilux family. Toyota’s concept of Mobility for All recognizes that customers do not share identical circumstances, even if they may have the same preference for a tough truck.
“The Hilux ICE and BEV each serve to fulfill different market and industry needs. The ICE focuses on traditional pickup usages such as long hauling, heavy lugging, and out-of-town journeys. The BEV, meanwhile, is catered toward business use with zero-emissions operations and high-tech utility,” explained Chua-Lim.
In short: no gatekeeping all the new goodies in the BEV variant only, which gives everyone the power to choose according to their needs.
Why Drivers Keep Making the Toyota Choice
There is no better brand ambassador than a happy customer. Which is why there was no need for famous faces at the Toyota Legacy Experience; the manufacturer focused on their best spokespersons: their fans.
Without their generations of fans? No event. Period.
Hilux Club Philippines member Twyford Ong admitted that the trusty pickup has essentially become a mainstay in his life: “For me, what has kept the Hilux remain relevant is its durability and versatility. Over the years, the Hilux has also evolved in terms of comfort, design and technology while still keeping its toughness and reliability that it has always been known for.”
Atty. Bam related, "In HCP, we have members with different Hilux generations, from older models such as the LN106 to newer models like the Travo. Despite the differences in age and technology, these vehicles continue to serve their owners well, whether they are used for everyday driving, work, long-distance travel, off-road adventures, or community outreach."

Land Cruiser Club of the Philippines member Kelly Tiu shared, "I admire [the Land Cruiser’s] reliability, durability and its classic design. It is very dependable especially when I travel along with my family, be it on road or off road. It is definitely a legend, that is built to last."
Toyota’s whole-hearted acceptance of car modding culture was a sign of a healthy relationship. The brand trusts customers to build their products right while the owners trust that their trucks and SUVs are platforms that won’t let them down.
“This trust is important to us, so we make it a point to deliver vehicles that are worth their loyalty. We also try to empower this passionate community by giving them an avenue to share their passion online or through our events,” shared Chua-Lim.
It checks out, because while seeing a shiny new car in a showroom can definitely trigger feelings of want, it’s hard to look at a decked-out, enthusiast-maintained Land Cruiser–from the generation your nostalgia yearns for–without thinking "Damn! I want to do that too."

“In a practical sense, giving customers the power to choose means empowering them with a wide range of available vehicles locally and aftersales support. This way, they can make the right choice for their needs. At every price point and in every stage of a customer’s life, there’s a Toyota vehicle, product or service for them,” said Chua-Lim.
Beyond practical considerations, one could feel the passion while physically walking through the timeline of Toyota’s legacy. It may be easier to maintain a Toyota thanks to their renowned reliability and parts availability, sure, but putting together a time-capsule car from the 70s, 80s, or even 90s is never a simple task one wouldn’t do for a car they don’t genuinely love.
It’s a feeling Toyota hopes people understand, as Chua-Lim summarized, “The Toyota Legacy Experience serves to introduce the general public to the Toyota community. At the event, on top of learning more about Toyota vehicles, they also get the opportunity to hear the stories of different generations of Toyota owners. It’s a great community that gathers beyond just ownership and driving.” That being said, expect more events like the Toyota Legacy Experience in the future.

Legends Constantly Rewritten
Going back, how does a legend change without losing itself?
The Land Cruiser and Hilux have definitely changed throughout the generations, these models have created a rich heritage written by Toyota and the community alike. They’ve adapted to new realities such as electrification while holding on to their (literally) stubborn reputation of being sound, reliable, near unkillable vehicles.
Perhaps Toyota has found that magical balance of living up to their own history while showing us the future–or maybe it’s because the legend of the Land Cruiser and Hilux hasn’t even been fully written yet.
