If You’ve Always Wanted a Sports Car for Five, the Porsche Cayenne is for You

When Porsche unveiled the Cayenne in 2002, tongues wagged and eyebrows were raised. Many felt it was sacrilege for a revered maker of fast, flashy sports cars to bite the bullet and introduce a big, hulking, four-door SUV.

But Porsche ended up having the last laugh, as customers embraced the Cayenne and helped propel it to become one of the German marque’s bestselling models (along with the smaller Macan and the one that started it all—the 911).

Sixteen years and two iterations of the Cayenne later, Porsche has finally unveiled the third generation of its flagship model. The gleaming white unit attracted stares not just from media guests but curious passersby at the Powerplant Mall in Rockwell when it was unveiled by no less than Porsche Philippines CEO Roberto Coyiuto III.

“A globally successful model, the Cayenne is the epitome of a Sport Utility Vehicle with the power and character of a sports car,” he said. “This third-generation Cayenne further elevates the Porsche experience with its new turbocharged engines, three-chamber air suspension, and innovative digital cockpit display.

Just how different is this from the previous model? William Angsiy, product planning officer of Porsche Philippines, broke it down for us.


“We call this all-new Cayenne the E3,” he said. “In terms of body, this is 2.5 inches longer and two inches wider than the predecessor. There’s more aluminum in this one, compared to previous model, which means it’s 45 kilograms lighter.”

Angsiy added that, for the first time, the Cayenne offers optional rear-axle steering, which basically improves agility on bends and stability when changing lanes at high speeds.

Inside, the Cayenne has a massive 12.3-inch display screen outfitted with Porsche’s TFT communication management system, allowing easy, no-worries access to all the modern tech conveniences like surfing, navigation, bluetooth, USB and other entertainment options.

The new Porsche SUV comes in three models. The first is a 3-liter V6 turbocharged engine which delivers 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque, and can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 6.2 seconds with a maximum speed of 245 kph (1.1 second and 16 kph faster than its predecessor).

The second is the Cayenne S with a 2.9-liter V6 twin turbo engine, delivering 440 hp and 550 Nm of torque. It can zoom from zero to 100 kph in 5.2 seconds with a maximum speed of 265 kph.

Lastly, the Cayenne Turbo with a 4-liter V8 twin turbo engine brings 550 hp and 770Nm of a torque and can rocket from zero to 100 kph in 4.1 seconds.

If all that sounds too technical for you, consider just one thing: in the Cayenne, Porsche made sure to stick to its sports car roots but build one that’s big enough to comfortably accommodate five.

“The customer for the new Cayenne is someone who enjoys the company of his or her family,” Angsiy said. “They like to go out of town, go on long drives, even go off-roading. The Cayenne is very attractive for those whose objective is having a sportscar and an SUV in one. It’s ‘sports car together.’”
