Why You Will Love the New Mercedes-AMG A35

Mercedes-Benz Philippines arranged a curated media test drive in the backroads of the exclusive Tagaytay Highlands Golf and Country Club for drivers to experience its new Mercedes-AMG A35 model. The new generation AMG-powered A-Class hot hatch is its latest answer to car enthusiasts who want a fast and powerful high performance luxury compact hatchback that is not only fun to drive but makes a great daily driver as well.

The gorgeous and sporty compact hatch may be considered the “entry” model of the AMG range, but it doesn’t mean that it is a less capable car than its brawnier and more muscular-engined siblings in the upper model range. Thanks to Mercedes-AMG’s constant design and engineering innovation, the A35 may just be the perfect combination of a serious weekend track car with the premium feel and very pliant ride of a German luxury compact car with power on the tap.

The turbocharged four-cylinder engine churns out 306 horsepower and 400Nm of torque and is mated to the AMG Speedshift DCT 7G (dual-clutch transmission). The 4Matic all-wheel drive is also tuned to make sure it offers the best grip on the road specially in weaving through the tight corners to make sure one can squeeze every power out of the 2-liter engine.

Outside, the new A35 has the more aggressive AMG aerodynamics package to make it look sportier and more exciting to drive. But it’s not just cosmetic—the package was developed by Mercedes-AMG in the wind tunnel to improve handling at high speeds and provides the basis for even greater driving enjoyment. The detachable body parts are used to increase negative lift force. To complete the body styling, the model comes with its signature AMG radiator grille, front apron with larger front splitter, 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels and AMG rear wing.

The interior is just as sporty, with the newest tech accoutrements like the dual 10.25-inch displays on the dashboard with the newest MBUX infotainment system with voice control system and from the touchpad on the center console and touchscreen features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration also comes standard.

The cockpit feels very much like all other current AMG models. With the AMG Supersport, one also gets an upshift indicator. Other driver data and performance indicators and available displays to warm up the car ahead of the track, set up the car for track driving. Other key performance indicators like G-meter and engine data are conveniently laid out as well in case you want to turn the A35 into a track weapon for the weekend.

Other soft-touchpoints include the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather complete with command buttons and high quality leather claddings inside the cabin. A 64-color ambient-light system complete with backlit center vents offer a nice mood light system while driving, specially at night.

We also drove an older GLA 45 and CLS 63 AMG models to see generational differences in how new tech and innovations have evolved through the years. The A35 just kept us wanting more. The elevated and twisty back roads with long straights of Tagaytay Highlands allowed us to see how the Mercedes A35 AMG is worthy of the AMG badge, which also doubles up as a very capable everyday performance car. It’s fast, it’s fun, and very comfortable to drive. The car felt so planted even when driven aggressively around the corners and power was very linear, with practically no turbo lag for the new turbocharger system. Even in the most aggressive sport plus dynamic setting, the car felt very pliant and there was no fatigue. The seats also hug you just right with proper bolstering.
