I can still remember the very first time I saw the Toyota Fortuner. It was at the Manila International Auto Show back in the summer of 2005, when Toyota teased the motoring public with several units parked at the driveway of the World Trade Center. Everyone at the show flocked to see these cars and became enamored with the robust, functional and stylish mid-sized SUV.

The Fortuner filled the gap between Toyota’s RAV4 and Land Cruiser Prado and this model quickly became market leader. Fifteen years and 220,000 units later, it continues to be the most popular choice for mid-sized SUVs in the country.

In 2017, the Fortuner was the best-selling vehicle in the country and last August, it dominated the mid-sized SUV category with over 30 percent market share.

“The Fortuner captured the hearts of many Filipinos as proven by strong sales,” said Toyota Philippines President Atsuhiro Okamoto at the launch of the latest iteration of the Fortuner last weekend. “It has an SUV body perfect for the Philippines’ flood-prone streets, an array of variants including a fuel-efficient diesel engine, a macho look that satisfies desires, and most of all, an affordable price—making it an achievable dream.

“The new Fortuner is smarter, stronger, safer than ever,” he added. “With its refreshed line-up led by the top-of-the-line premium LTD grade, the country’s bestselling SUV just got better.”

According to Toyota Philippines, the target is to sell over 3,000 units this year alone. And it looks like it will hit that mark. Here are four possible reasons why.

1| Four grades with 10 variants to choose from

The Fortuner has four models with 10 variants to choose from. The number of choices for the new Fortuner caters to different types of buyers with varying features and two types of engines. There are 4x4 and 4x2 variants with two engine types and it comes with both manual and automatic transmissions. Regardless of the variant you get, all new Fortuner owners will be confident they’re getting a reliable and stylishly functional SUV—values that Toyota is known for.

The new Fortuner LTD features a radically new look and is made more elegant coming in the two-tone color black roof color. With a new and sportier front and rear bumper design, it also comes with a set of machine-cut 18-inch alloy wheels. Split-type LED headlamps and LED front foglamps, sequential turn signal lamps, and the redesigned LED rear combination lamps garnish the LTD variant with a more dynamic design and offers better visibility on the road.

The Q and V variants also get LED foglamps and redesigned LED rear combination lamps, as well as Bi-Beam LED Headlamps with LED Line Guide - Daytime Running Lights, while the G variants also now come with Bi-Beam LED Headlamps with LED DRL.

2| It’s formal yet ruggedly elegant

The LTD, Q and V models comes with Smart Entry and Push Start System. Inside, the LTD variant features an elegant interior in leather with maroon accents, as well as galaxy black trim and interior illumination which gives added sophistication in the interior look of the vehicle. The Q variant also gets the black leather interior complemented by a dark wood trim.

You don’t need to let go of the steering wheel to get easy access to switches. You can operate the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-compatible audio system across all variants using the controls located ergonomically on the steering wheel. The more premium LTD and Q variants have Eight-Way Power Adjust front seats, and Front Seat Ventilation System for the LTD variant.

The new Fortuner also has a wireless charger and rear USB chargers available on LTD, Q, and V grades, ensuring you and your passengers can charge your gadgets with ease. What’s new for the Fortuner is its nine-speaker JBL sound system for the LTD variants.

3| Formidable off-road and on-road prowess

The New Fortuner LTD and Q variants are powered by the 1GD-FTV engine which gives a hefty 201 horsepower (204 Ps) max output and 500 Nm max of torque, while the V and G variants have the 2GD-FTV engine which gives 147 HP (150Ps) max output and 400 Nm max torque. Toyota also claims that there is a five percent improvement in fuel efficiency versus the previous generation Fortuner for the V and G variants.

With all that power, Toyota also added the driver aids and safety features, such as the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control, which are now available for the LTD and Q variants. All variants come with SRS airbags (seven for the LTD variants), three-point ELR seatbelts, Anti-Lock Brake System with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control, and Hill-Start Assist Control. The 4x4 LTD variant also has Downhill Assist Control. Also, all variants come with a total of six clearance and back sonars, in addition to the Panoramic View Monitor that comes with the LTD, Q, and V variants or reverse camera for the G variants.
