The Ranger FX4: Meet Number 14 in Ford's Pickup Lineup
Ford Philippines introduced the Ranger FX4 model early last year and this month, it introduces yet another variant—the FX4 Max. It’s a highly capable pickup targeting the growing off-roader market. Just last month, Ford Philippines unveiled its refreshed Ranger pickup lineup, with a new design and exterior enhancements across its Ranger XLS, XLT, and Wildtrak variants.
The FX4 Max makes it a total of 14 models and variants available in the Ford local pickup truck lineup, which is the one of the most number for any vehicle brand. Priced at P1.698 million, the FX4 Max is spec’d to take in a lot of punishment and meet the demands of the off-roading community while living up to the Ranger’s brand of comfort, safety, and versatility.

In having a well-equipped 4x4 set up, good suspension is always essential. Inspired from the Ranger Raptor, the FX4 Max’s suspension comes with the new 2.0-inch monotube Fox shock absorbers in both front and rear. The Fox shock absorbers in the rear suspension has a remote reservoir and leaf springs, giving it better rapid recovery from extensive and prolonged off-road use. Remote reservoirs are containers that store the fluids of a shock absorber, giving it additional fluid capacity and helps lower fluid temperature, dissipating heat caused by constant friction when the suspension is subject to rigorous use oftentimes caused by extended off-roading use. The fluids inside the shock absorber foams up when it overheats and makes the shock absorber loses its ability to properly dampen the suspension, causing a bouncy and sometimes dangerous handling situation for the vehicle.
In front, the Fox shock absorbers are paired with tuned coil springs for greater compliance off-road. The traditional leaf springs have been also modified to give a balance of good payload capacity and better ride. The FX4 Max comes with 17-inch alloy wheels with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires for outstanding traction and have tougher sidewalls which makes it perfect in dealing with unexpected rough surfaces.
While the Ranger FX4 Max may look tough outside with its rugged personality, the interior offers a premium and comfortable cocoon for the driver and passengers. The seats are cladded in leather, which is new to this Ranger lineup, and it is matched with carbon-accents with Miko suede inserts and distinctive FX4 Max embroidery.
The FX4 Max uses the same engine in the top two variants of the Ranger—the Raptor and Wildtrak 4x4. Powering the FX4 Max is the 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine, rated at 213PS of power and 500Nm of torque mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With this, it can ably carry a 981-kilogram payload as well as 3,500-kilogram of towing capability.
Just like most premium 4x4 pickup trucks, it is also equipped with a host of smart and safety features that elevate the overall driving experience, while keeping both drivers and passengers protected on the road. It features an eight-inch color touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, Smart Keyless Entry with Push Button Start, SYNC 3 with Voice-Activated controls, Bluetooth with Phone/Audio streaming, two USB ports, and six speakers.
The Ranger FX4 Max also has a host of safety and security with driver-assist features such as Cruise Control, ABS + EBD, Electronic Stability Control Including Roll-over Mitigation and Traction Control, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control, driver and passenger airbags, Rear Parking Sensors, and Child Seat ISOFIX Anchorage Points. And unique to the FX4 Max is the auxiliary switch pack. This feature gives owners the ability to easily connect and operate auxiliary accessories and equipment in a seamless and integrated solution. It uses a specific 250A alternator to support power supply to multiple accessories and reduce reliance on the vehicle’s battery.
“The Ranger FX4 Max is definitely a strong addition to our growing Ranger portfolio and further boosts the off-road capabilities of our trucks,” says PK Umashankar, president and managing director of Ford Philippines. “It is the perfect pickup for customers who seek adventures as it is equipped with features that offer confidence and convenience in taking on the roads less traveled.”
