UAAGI Eyes EV Push as Fuel Costs, Market Jitters Threaten Auto Sales
As fuel prices climb and consumer confidence wavers, UAAGI is rolling out six brands, 100-plus dealerships, a full slate of electrified vehicles, and betting that variety wins.

The Philippine automotive industry entered the year with a more complicated landscape than in previous years. Slowing consumer confidence, inflationary pressures, and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have begun to cast a shadow over vehicle sales. Yet amid these uncertainties, United Asia Automotive Group Inc. (UAAGI) is doubling down on expansion, product diversity, and electrified mobility as it positions itself for the road ahead.
The group signaled that intent recently with UAAGI On the Move 2026, a multi-brand automotive showcase held from February 26 to March 1 at the Central Atrium of SM Mall of Asia. The event brought together all six of the distributor's brands, BAIC, Chery, Foton, Jetour, Lynk & Co, and Radar, in a single venue, offering Filipinos a look at everything from conventional internal combustion vehicles to hybrids and fully electric models.
While the four-day mall display attracted shoppers with static exhibits and test drive opportunities, the broader significance of the event lies in what it represents: the kickoff of UAAGI's aggressive sales and marketing push for the year.

A Challenging Start to 2026
The timing could not be more critical. Global tensions are sending ripples through energy markets and pushing oil prices upward, and analysts warn that the Philippines, one of the region's most fuel-import dependent economies, will face another round of pump price hikes.
For Filipino motorists, rising fuel costs historically lead to a reassessment of vehicle ownership. Larger, fuel-hungry vehicles become less appealing, while efficient powertrains gain traction. This dynamic places distributors with strong hybrid and electric offerings in a potentially advantageous position.
UAAGI appears to be preparing precisely for that shift.
The Power of Choice
The group's strategy centers on offering a wide spectrum of vehicle technologies under one umbrella. At the MOA showcase, visitors checked out rugged off-roaders and SUVs from BAIC, feature-rich crossovers from Chery, people carriers and pickups from Foton, family-oriented adventure vehicles from Jetour, and electrified premium models from Lynk & Co. Completing the lineup were fully electric pickup trucks from Radar, a niche that remains largely unexplored in the Philippine market.
This broad portfolio reflects UAAGI's philosophy of giving the motoring public what it calls the "Power of Choice," a concept that may prove increasingly relevant if energy prices continue to climb.
Hybrids and electric vehicles, once seen as niche products, are now being viewed by many buyers as a hedge against volatile fuel costs. Lynk & Co's plug-in hybrid offerings, for instance, allow owners to drive short daily commutes on electricity while retaining the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer trips. Radar's electric pickups, meanwhile, represent a bold entry into a segment traditionally dominated by diesel powertrains.
As fuel prices rise, such alternatives could see growing interest among both private buyers and fleet operators.

Strength in Numbers
Another key advantage for UAAGI is the breadth of its dealer network. Over the past few years, the group has steadily expanded its footprint across the country, building a distribution base of more than 100 dealerships spanning its six brands.
In a market where accessibility and after-sales support are often decisive factors in a purchase, that network provides both visibility and customer reassurance. It also allows UAAGI to introduce new technologies, particularly electrified powertrains, through a familiar and trusted retail infrastructure.
Equally important is the group's ability to leverage partnerships with major financial institutions such as Bank of the Philippine Islands and RCBC, enabling easier access to vehicle financing even as economic conditions fluctuate.

Preparing for the Next Phase of Mobility
Events like UAAGI On the Move also serve another strategic function: education. For many Filipinos, electrified mobility remains unfamiliar territory. Allowing potential customers to see, touch, and test drive hybrids and EVs in a casual mall environment helps demystify the technology.
At the MOA showcase, visitors were able to experience multiple powertrain types, from traditional gasoline engines to hybrid systems to fully electric vehicles, all within a single event. That exposure can play a significant role in shaping purchasing decisions as awareness of alternative mobility options grows.

Navigating an Uncertain Road
The Philippine auto market has proven resilient through past economic cycles, but 2026 is shaping up to be another year where adaptability will be key. Rising energy prices, evolving consumer expectations, and a gradual shift toward electrification are all reshaping the competitive landscape.
UAAGI's response is a diversified product lineup, an expanding dealership footprint, and a hard push into electrified mobility, a company already positioning for what comes next.
