DOTr: No Motorcycle Taxis Should Operate Past March 23, 2020, Until a Law Is Passed


In spite of all the turmoil surrounding the whole Angkas issue, the good thing is that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has allowed motorcycle taxis—JoyRide and MoveIt included—to operate for the duration of the pilot run which has been extended until this coming March.

The technical working group (TWG) formed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), however, has recently clarified that there will be no further extensions once this new three-month period ends.

According to an Inquirer report, TWG chairman Antonio Gardiola Jr. said that the aforementioned time period is enough to be able to gather data needed for the study. He also emphasized that there should no longer be any motorcycle taxis operating once the pilot run concludes, and the service providers will have to wait for the government to finalize the necessary policies first.

In case you missed it, the LTFRB announced a few weeks ago that the pilot run for motorcycle taxis has been extended to March 23, 2020, but it also ordered that Angkas cut about 17,000 people from its rider pool to make way for the new competitors. A lot has happened since then, including the #SaveAngkas and #BoycottJoyRide movements that made headlines as well.
