Grab will soon have serious competition. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved JoyRide’s application to be recognized as a transport network company (TNC). That means it will soon offer car-hailing services.
JoyRide is a motorcycle taxi-hailing platform that has cornered the two-wheel market in Metro Manila along with Angkas.
The Philippines operations of Singapore-based Grab currently dominates the local ride-hailing market, after acquiring rival Uber's business in 2018.
In September 2018, Grab Philippines entered the motorcycle ride-hailing service in the Philippines when it announced a partnership with MOVE IT. The partnership essentially made MOVE IT services available through the Grab platform, instantly widening its customer base. At the same time, Grab users will now get access to a motorcycle taxi service.
After obtaining the approval from the LTFRB, JoyRide officials are now encouraging transport network vehicle service (TNVS) operators and drivers to register as partners.
"We view this as a good development as commuters will now have another viable choice for safe, comfortable, and affordable car rides to their destination,” JoyRide SVP for Corporate Affairs Noli Eala said.
Besides offering a motorcycle taxi service, JoyRide also has express deliveries, shopping as a service, and tricycle ride hailing, in addition to delivery services for enterprises, an online marketplace, and Covid-19 home testing.
JoyRide officially started operations in December 2019 as a motorcycle taxi hailing platform. It currently has about 20,000 driver-partners and operations in Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Baguio, and Metro Cebu.
