It's a big year for Harry Potter fans: a new audiobook recording of the series is on the way, the highly-anticipated HBO adaptation is coming soon, and now Warner Bros. has officially announced the sequel to the hit video game Hogwarts Legacy.
Given that the first one shifted more than 40 million units and quickly became one of the best-selling video games of all time, the announcement really should come as no surprise; Hogwarts Legacy was the indisputable proof that, despite the seeming dominance of multiplayer games online, there's still a huge market for story-driven single-player games with minimal microtransactions.
The news of the sequel comes from a recent earnings report from Warners Bros, where it was shared that a "second instalment" for Hogwarts Legacy was in the works, and that it's expected to "meaningfully contribute" to the company's future revenue.
Other than that, we don't know very much about the game: we can assume that the gameplay will be similar, the map could be expanded beyond the school and its surrounding areas, and perhaps there'll be a time jump closer to the period of the Fantastic Beasts films? (The first game was set in the 1890s, after all).
The timescale is also, unfortunately, something we've been given absolutely no clue about. The earliest we'll see the game, if it is already in development, is autumn next year. If it does come out around then, there's a chance it'll be a launch title for the PS6, which is rumoured to be released then, but a 2028 release seems much more likely, given the fact that no specifics about the game have been revealed yet.
