The facts of our past are more accessible than ever, leaving little reason for the truth to fade from our collective memory.

On February 25, 2026, the Philippines commemorates the 40th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, a series of non-violent demonstrations that led to the departure of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos and ultimately ended the 20-year dictatorship. It is also known as the EDSA Revolution, having transpired along the Metro Manila thoroughfare from February 22 to 25, 1986.
From 2002 to 2023, the day has been declared as a special non-working holiday to allow Filipinos to pay their respects to the victims of the regime and recognize the bloodless revolution as a key turning point in the struggle against fascism. But most recently, with the Marcoses back in Malacañang, February 25 is no longer included in the list of holidays. In 2024, it was pointed out by President Bongbong Marcos that the day "falls on a Sunday" [anyway]; and in 2025, it was proclaimed as a special working day. Still, many academic institutions opted to suspend classes or implement alternative learning modes, hoping to not further erase this part of our history from the minds of the youth.
With the Internet (as well as several books, movies, shows, and all kinds of media) available to us, we really have no excuse not to know the facts about the People Power Revolution. The University of the Philippines Diliman's Sentro ng Wikang Filipino likewise has several e-books available for download by the public through the SWF website.

Mga Piling Tala ng Isang Blogger

Raymond V. Palatino, a blogger, activist, and former Member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines (under Kabataan Partylist), writes about blogging as a platform for critical discourse.

It is well documented that thousands of individuals, from critics to journalists, activists, and students, were forcibly abducted, detained, tortured, and killed by state forces during the 20-year Martial Law era under Marcos. There's even a monument called "Bantayog ng mga Desaparecido" (in Baclaran, Paranaque) that bears the names of more than 1,300 people who were forcibly disappeared (desaparecido). Pag-angkop sa Kagipitan at Ligalig (2020) not only contains reported numbers of these cases from 1977 to 1983, but also narrates the experiences of political prisoners and their families.
Pagtatahip-Dunong: Mga Awit ng Kilusang Bayan sa Pilipinas (1986-2018)

In Pagtatahip-Dunong (2022), Joel C. Malabanan surveys the evolution and development of protest songs from 1986 to 2018.
