Architect Lorenzo L. Calma, who was described as "a visionary, mentor, and one of the quiet pillars who helped shape the soul of Philippine Interior Design" by Lor Calma & Partners, passed away on January 27, 2026. Lor, as he was fondly called, was 97 years old.
Who was Lor Calma?
Lor Calma (born March 4, 1928) was a pioneering Filipino modernist architect, designer, and multidisciplinary artist whose work since the 1950s helped define postwar Philippine modern design. Trained in architecture (Mapua Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning) and interior design, he built a reputation for clean, minimalist lines and thoughtful integration of local materials and craft across architecture, interiors, furniture, sculpture, and jewelry.
He founded Lor Calma & Partners and mentored a generation of practitioners; his pieces and spaces are prized for their restrained elegance, functional clarity, and enduring craftsmanship. He also co-founded the Philippine Institute of Interior Design, and held active roles in the United Architects of the Philippines (Makati Chapter), the Philippine Sculpture Society, the Art Association of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the Asian Cultural Council Philippines.
Calma's contributions have been honored in industry awards, such as the Most Outstanding Kapampangan in Arts & Architecture (2010), Hall of Fame honors from the Philippine Institute of Interior Design (1992, 2006), and Outstanding Professional of the Year in Interior Design (1997).
His practice—continued by his studio and family—remains influential in contemporary Philippine design.
Tributes to the Architect
"He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his generosity of spirit, his belief in others, and the quiet warmth and calm he brought to everyone he met. A pioneering Filipino architect and designer, he leaves behind an enduring legacy that helped shape modern Philippine architecture," his children, Lorena (a designer) and Eduardo (an architect), said in a post.
"I would like to honor and pay tribute to my uncle - Lor Calma - a true renaissance man - multifaceted artist and architect who inspired me at a very young age. He is funny with always a very discerning taste with interesting stories - very experimental and always promoting Filipino craftsmanship - the most authentic display of Filipino modern minimalism and that can truly express the sensual use of local materials and his magnificent paper folds architecture showing both restraint and bold statements," his niece, Juan Carlo, who's also an architect, said.
"At a time when interiors were often seen as mere ornamentation, Lor Calma stood firm in his belief that design is a discipline rooted in space, integrity, culture, and human experience. Through his involvement with the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, he helped elevate interior design into a principled profession; one grounded in ethics, education, and responsibility, inseparable from architecture itself.
His legacy lives in the values he championed: restraint over excess, meaning over trends, craftsmanship over convenience. He taught us that design is not about spectacle, but about clarity, purpose, and respect - for materials, for context, and for people. Beyond titles and institutions, he was a quiet guide whose philosophy continues to influence generations of designers," the rest of Lor Calma & Partners' post goes.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Lor Calma's wake is from January 28 to 30, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Chapel 3 & 4, Heritage Memorial Park, Taguig City. Interment is on January 31, with details to follow.
