The 5 Best Colognes That’ll Get You Noticed by Women (In a Good Way)

If you’ve ever been trapped on an elevator or in a train car or any other small space where someone put on too much fragrance—good, bad, or decidedly mediocre—you know that a “noticeable” scent is not always a good thing. Most times, it means you did one spritz too many. Your olfactory bubble becomes a red flag, like you’re masking a different odor rather than presenting this one that you enjoy.
On the other hand, if you’re sitting close to someone, standing in conversation with them, give someone a hug, or just notice a little waft of something nice as they walk by—that stops you in your tracks. You have to know what that person is wearing. That’s the kind of noticeable we’re going for. In our years of fragrance testing (both in wearing and in smelling), we have found that it’s often the high-quality stuff that sticks out in a good way.
This is in part because you only need a spritz and the better scents more smoothly interact with your natural body chemistry. That makes the scent feel particular to the person wearing it, rather than just a stark—oh, that’s [insert something from CVS]—across the board. Here, our top five that’ll get you noticed (positive).
D.S. & Durga Cowboy Grass
D.S. & Durga’s Cowboy Grass is a gender-neutral scent that is honestly unlike most other fragrances. Out of the bottle, it smells grassy—apropos, we know. While that sagebrush and switchgrass comes through at first, on the body, you get more of the other notes: bergamot, vetiver, and rose otto. It’s still outdoorsy, but has a sophistication to it. It is light, subtle, and smells different on everyone.

Creed Aventus
Creed Aventus is a perennial favorite, and that is because it is good. It is, yes, very pricey. But with that comes a fragrance experience that you simply cannot get out of something cheaper. It is potent but not overpowering, distinct but malleable to the person. It is woody (oakmoss, cedarwood) and has some fun, lighter notes (lemon, pink pepper) that make it interesting rather than musky.
A friend of mine and her work team bought this for their boss, and he said, “I don’t know if I’m gonna make it home tonight,” implying he was going to get stopped by women. Something to think about.

Maison Margiela Replica Soul of the Forest
To be honest, you really can’t go wrong with any Maison Margiela Replica scents. They are all expertly crafted, balanced in scent, and just plain good. We think Soul of the Forest is especially good, though, giving off that exact kind of “I only noticed it once I hugged him” kind of aura. It’s woody and woodsy with cedarwood, patchouli, and moss accord.

Diptyque Lazulio
Diptyque’s Lazulio is such a standout scent and trying to describe it is a bit like trying to describe how something tastes. Even Diptyque says it’s inspired by a “peacock feather,” which, while poetic, tells us close to nothing.
Because it’s Diptyque, its scent is strong and individual but never overpowering. This one has rose base notes, vetiver middle, and rhubarb top. It feels uber fancy, and we like it in particular for special occasions.

Phlur Somebody Wood
For daytime fragrance wearing, Phlur is excellent. The scents are lightweight, not overpowering, and feel versatile enough for daily wear. You really can’t go wrong with any of them—we love the Discovery tester kit for that—but Somebody Wood is a no-brainer for more date-friendly feels. We’ve got sandalwood, vanilla, and amber topped with bergamot and lemon for something bright but with depth. And at $60, it’s an easy sell.

Le Labo Thé Noir 29
Absolutely no shade to Santal 33 (old loves die hard), but that might be the fragrance that gets you noticed in a less good way. Not because of the fragrance itself but because of its ubiquity. We love Thé Noir 29 as a good alternative. It still feels inviting and subtle with more fun notes like bergamot and fig balancing out cedarwood and musk. It is giving date night.
