“Nowadays, many men—especially as they reach a certain age—are placing more focus on hair and scalp care,” celebrity makeup artist and hairstylist Muriel Vega Perez observes. “While there can be several reasons behind this, the primary motivations are often related to maintaining a good appearance and boosting self-confidence.”
Many men today are more conscious of hair and scalp health, moving beyond the wash-and-wear mindset, says Perez, who has worked with the likes of Alden Richards, James Reid, Brent Manalo, Miguel Vergara, Carlo Aquino, EJ Obiena, and Kiefer Ravena. He adds that clients have also become more attuned to their specific needs.
“I believe 50 percent of men with specific concerns have already incorporated serums, leave-ins, and treatments into their daily routines,” he says, noting that many are now more deliberate in choosing products suited to their concerns.
At the same time, convenience still matters. Perez notes that while men are becoming more invested in hair care, most still prefer routines that are simple, efficient, and easy to maintain. For those looking to upgrade their routine without overcomplicating it, he recommends focusing on key habits that make the most impact.
1 | Start with the right cleanse
Perez advises starting with a gentle, hydrating shampoo, such as the Dior Sauvage Hydrating Shampoo. “Shampoo two to four times a week, or daily only if you sweat a lot,” he says. “The Sauvage formula cleanses, hydrates, and strengthens hair without drying it out, keeping it soft and healthy.”
2 | Focus on the scalp, not just hair
“When washing your hair, take the time to massage the scalp for 30 to 60 seconds and let the foam run through the lengths,” Perez suggests. “Healthy hair starts with a clean, balanced scalp, so avoid harsh scrubbing.”
3 | Don’t skip hydration
Hydration is key, even for men. Perez recommends pairing your routine with a lightweight treatment. “The Sauvage range uses cactus extract, which helps retain moisture and strengthen hair,” he explains. “For an extra boost, the limited-edition Sauvage Hair Serum nourishes and texturizes hair without weighing it down. Its non-greasy formula can be applied to wet or dry hair, adding structure, reviving shine, and leaving a subtle scent that complements your Sauvage fragrance.”
4 | Post-workout care is essential
For active men, Perez stresses the importance of rinsing or shampooing after sweating. “This prevents buildup, irritation, and scalp issues,” he says.
5 | Keep styling minimal and smart
Heavy styling products can weigh down hair and clog the scalp. “Use matte or light styling products, avoid daily heavy styling, and skip styling before workouts,” Perez advises. “It keeps your scalp clean and your hair healthy.”
6 | Dry it right
How you dry your hair matters as much as how you wash it. Perez recommends patting hair dry instead of rubbing aggressively and letting it air-dry or using low heat. “This prevents breakage and frizz,” he says.
7 | Smell good, but not overpowering
Hair products can add a subtle, fresh scent without being too strong. “The Sauvage hair line leaves a light fragrance on the hair,” Perez notes. “You can layer it lightly with your Sauvage cologne so it’s noticeable but not overwhelming.”
8 | Keep it consistent
Finally, consistency is key. Perez recommends sticking to a simple routine and keeping regular trims every two to four weeks for short styles. “Consistency leads to better texture, shine, and overall confidence,” he says.
