This year has felt like the tipping point for celebrity watch spotting. Once a niche obsession confined to subreddits and horology forums, working out who’s wearing what has become a pop-culture sport powered by Instagram sleuths such as @celebwatchspotter, @superwatchman, and @watchballers.ig.

Chief inspector is Nick Gould—aka @niccoloy—whose knack for identifying a vintage reference from one blurry Getty image has become IG legend, and who is the reliable source for many a magazine style story. (Hi, Nick!) Even hyper-focused feeds such as @whatsdanielwearing, dedicated to Daniel Craig’s wardrobe and wristwear, are thriving—not least because the former 007 and Omega ambassador has a habit of “accidentally” leaking new models months before their official release.

These “slips of the wrist” are the new marketing playbook. Days before Rolex unveiled its first all-new model in 13 years in March, the Land-Dweller appeared on Roger Federer’s wrist as he sat outside a Swiss restaurant eating … fondue. Accident? Or proof that, in 2025, one leaked snap gets more coverage than a year of press releases?

Watches have become red-carpet staples too. At the Grammys, Will Smith wore a vintage Universal Genève via dealer Eric Wind. At Venice, stylist Ilaria Urbinati put the Rock in Chopard—suitably grown-up wristwear for a man making his first Oscar play. Rami Malek, Timothée Chalamet, and Paul Mescal kept Cartier in the spotlight, while Leonardo DiCaprio earned his new Rolex ambassador fee with the covetable models he wore at Wimbledon and L.A. premieres.

Honorable mention goes to Will Ferrell, who mocked the whole red-carpet wrist pose at the Golden Globes, parading around with his Omega-wrapped wrist held high: “Look at my watch, everyone!”

But the celebrity wrist moment of the year? Taylor Swift, whose Cartier in the photos of her engagement to Travis Kelce sparked a full-blown Internet row. Panthère or discontinued Demoiselle? It turned out to be the latter—as proved, inevitably, by Instagram sleuths.
