BYD Philippines unveiled the Sealion 7 in a no-nonsense way last May 28. The surging EV powerhouse did not book a hotel ballroom for the event, which is run-of-the-mill for most other auto launches.

Instead, it parked several cars on the atrium floor of Ayala’s Glorietta and let the crowd do the rest. By the time the covers came off, it was clear this launch was about proximity rather than a limited press kit.

The Sealion 7 is the first proper performance electric vehicle from BYD for the Philippines. It is priced at P2.58 million for the AWD Performance trim, with no starter variant to dilute the message. The specifications read like a dare: dual motors, 530 PS, 690 Nm, and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds. Power is supplied by an 82.6 kWh blade battery with a range of up to 542 km. The vehicle is 4830 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2930 mm and 20-inch wheels, so it occupies a footprint that was once the realm of European SUVs.

Inside, the car features a rotating 15.6-inch screen, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, and ventilated leather seats with memory. It also includes a panoramic roof, a 12-speaker Dynaudio system, and a safety suite featuring the full DiPilot alphabet soup.

The scale of the brand explains why these details matter. Last year, BYD moved 4.27 million new energy vehicles globally. In the third quarter alone, it held over 40 percent of the global market share. When a Chinese automaker sits in the same conversation as Japanese and European brands in terms of value, the question of reliability becomes a thing of the past.

This global muscle is why the Sealion 7 matters here. It is landing in an ecosystem built by ACMobility. To illustrate the shift, my own office recently bought five BYDs for its executive re-fleeting program. With 81 dealerships, the brand now offers nationwide coverage that appeals to corporate fleet buyers.

ACMobility is also building the country's most serious charging backbone, with a plan for over 200 locations. The Evro app already has more than 78,000 registered users, turning electric charging into a habit.

Launching the Sealion 7 at Glorietta felt less like a debut and more like a culmination. Buyers can now walk into a showroom for a 530-horsepower SUV and not have to worry about where to charge it. The conversation is shifting from whether one should risk an electric vehicle to which one they actually want. The Sealion 7 is here to normalize performance electric driving and make 530 PS feel as small and accessible as a new phone launch.
