Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP)'s most recent offering for the local market is the all-new Toyota bZ4X, which is significant because it's the first full battery electric vehicle (BEV) sold under the Japanese car manufacturer's badge.

Enthusiasts might be surprised to know that, while Toyota is one of the world's biggest automobile manufacturers and a leading figure in motoring technology and innocation, it has only previously offered full electric vehicles only through its luxury arm Lexus. Much of TMP's current lineup of vehicles in the country offer a hybrid drivetrain system, reinforcing its belief that the future of mobility should offer multiple pathways, not a single solution.

Toyota is itself a pioneer in sustainable mobility solutions with the introduction of the Prius Hybrid in the Philippines in 2009. Today, both Toyota and Lexus collectively have 22 electrified models—arguably the widest xEV lineup in the country—with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and now full electric vehicles.

The arrival of the bZ4X signals that, for the Japanese car brand, local infrastructure, consumer awareness, and driving habits have matured enough for BEVs to become part of daily life, not just early adoption experiments.

At its core, the all-wheel-drive bZ4X blends Toyota's reputation for reliability with modern electric performance. It is powered by a 73.11 kWh lithium-ion battery and dual motors producing 227 PS at the front and 120 PS at the rear, delivering a combined torque of 439 Nm. With a claimed driving range of up to 570 kilometers under UN Regulation 101 testing, the bZ4X is designed to comfortably handle both city commutes and longer out-of-town drives. Eco Mode prioritizes efficiency, while X-Mode enhances traction and stability, reinforcing the SUV's go-anywhere character.

Visually, the bZ4X has a sharp, angular design, LED lighting, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a panoramic moonroof that fills the cabin with light. It has a 200mm ground clearance, which is good news for flood-prone areas in the Philippines, while a power back door with kick sensor adds everyday convenience.

Inside, the cabin features synthetic leather seats, generous rear legroom, heated seats for both rows, ventilated front seats, and an eight-way power driver's seat with memory. A 14-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto anchors the dashboard, complemented by a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, dual wireless charging pads, and USB-C ports for all passengers.

As for safety, the bZ4X comes standard with the latest Toyota Safety Sense, including Pre-Collision System, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive and Automatic High Beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Additional driver-assist features include Blind Spot Monitoring, a Panoramic View Monitor, and a digital inside rearview mirror.

Customers who decide to take the plunge with the bZ4X will get a free wall box home charger and a portable charger.

According to TMP First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations Elijah Marcial, the journey toward electrification is as much about education and readiness as it is about technology. Toyota's decision to offer bZ4X locally is a sure sign that it believes Fiipinos are ready to welcome BEVs into the mainstream.

Early customers of the model echo this sentiment. For some, the decision to go with an EV is driven by rising fuel costs and predictable daily routes supported by growing charging networks, particularly in areas like Nuvali. Others, meanwhile, bank on decades of Toyota ownership, service reliability, and long-term value. In a market where new EV brands are rapidly emerging, Toyota's entry offers familiarity, reassurance, and a sense of continuity.

The Toyota bZ4X is offered in a single, fully equipped variant, priced at P2.699 million for Dark Blue Mica with Attitude Black, P2.714 million for Platinum White Pearl Mica with Attitude Black, and P2.719 million for Precious Metal or Emotional Red with Attitude Black.
