The gates to Willy Wonka’s mysterious factory are finally swinging open for Filipino theatergoers as producers have announced the Manila premiere of the Broadway hit musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The Theatre at Solaire from July 8 to 26. Tickets are publicly available through Ticketworld on January 17.

Based on the beloved 1964 novel by Roald Dahl, the musical follows young Charlie Bucket as he finds a Golden Ticket and enters a world of chocolate rivers, nut-sorting squirrels, and the iconic Oompa-Loompas. It features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, book by David Greig.

Fans can expect a mix of the old and the new: the classic hits from the 1971 film, including "Pure Imagination," "The Candy Man," and "I’ve Got a Golden Ticket," as well as high-tech special effects and magic (by Las Vegas illusionist Tim Clothier). The global tour is led by a powerhouse team, featuring direction by Matt Lenz (based on original direction by four-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien), choreography by Alison Solomon (with original choreography by Joshua Bergasse), and musical supervision by Nate Patten and Greg Jarrett. They're joined by an award-winning Broadway creative, design, and production team, including Mark Thompson for set and costume; Christine Peters for tour scenic design; Jeff Sugg for projections; Rory Beaton for lighting; Mike Hacker for Orbital Sound, sound design; and Basil Twist for puppetry.

The Broadway production premiered in 2017 and ran for over 300 performances. It was followed by a four-year North American tour through 2022, and a run on London’s West End where the production received two Olivier Awards. Manila serves as a key stop in a massive two-to-three-year global tour that will visit the Middle East, India, and other Asian cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, and Seoul.

"Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a dazzling fantasy for everyone from everywhere. This new production features miraculous special effects and cutting-edge hologauze 3D technology based on advanced magic principles. We are so excited to share the breathtaking world of this beloved Broadway musical about the power of imagination, and the art of invention with Beijing audiences in this spectacular new immersive production from an all-Broadway creative team," Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, Producers and Co-Owners of Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, said in a joint statement.
