If you grew up in the 90s and are a Japanese animation nut, Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion was one of those pieces of art that changed the game when it came to how much depth and philosophical terror can be imparted to a viewer in the guise of giant robots fighting aliens/angels.

Another giant actually realized that a marriage between storied Japanese watchmaking and the iconic anime's otherworldly aesthetic could make for a special piece to commemorate the show's 30th anniversary.

The aptly named Seiko C038 EVA-01 has the sinister and fateful Spear of Longinus as its custom centerpiece second hand.

The drop is limited to 300 pieces and came out early in March, as the watch mirrors Shinji Ikari's zeitgeist-defining mecha.

Not unlike Seiko's other iconic divers like the "Turtle" or the "Captain Willard," the watch measures about 45 mm in case diameter and is fashioned in a stainless steel build with a two-tone green and purple colorway paying homage to the EVA-01 mecha.

Somehow, Seiko divers are inevitably linked to dystopian, apocalyptic worlds such as those from Evangelion and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

The dial is also patterned after Unit-01's face and chest plating. to evoke the messianic unease that washes over you after you finish the show.

It is powered by the ever-reliable Seiko Caliber 4R36 automatic movement capable of storing 41 hours of reserve power and a day-date calendar function, along with LumiBrite for night visibility.

The Seiko C038 EVA-01 will set you back around $847 (P52,306).
