Plays and Musicals to Watch This March

The Philippine theater scene continues to flourish with a variety of productions to watch: from musical revivals to experimental works to original Filipino plays. This March, Bagets The Musical, Spring Awakening, and About Us But Not About Us are still running. Here's the rest of the theater shows that are opening this month.

Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical returns for its 10th anniversary, offering a bolder and more intimate staging of the life of Apolinario Mabini. The story follows the "Sublime Paralytic" as he uses his intellect and unwavering principles to challenge Filipinos to rise above class and self-interest to build a unified nation. This production features Shaira Opsimar in the titular role, joined by Arman Ferrer and David Ezra as Emilio Aguinaldo, with a creative team led by playwright Nicanor Tiongson, composer Joed Balsamo, and director Chris Millado.

It runs from March 6 to 29 at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box), CCP Complex, Malate, Pasay City. Ticket prices range from P1,800 to P2,000. Available through TicketWorld.

A Chorus Line tells the poignant story of dancers vying for a spot in a new Broadway show, putting everything on the line during a life-changing audition. On an empty stage, each performer steps forward to bare their soul, sharing deeply personal stories of struggle, identity, and the relentless pursuit of their dreams. This production comes from the same team behind the acclaimed Into the Woods.

Barefoot Theatre Collaborative presents the Asian premiere of anthropology, a gripping psychological thriller by Lauren Gunderson that merges sci-fi with the deep ache of family grief. The story follows Merril, an expert AI programmer who, unable to accept the disappearance of her sister, uses her skills to manifest her as an Artificial Intelligence. What begins as a coping mechanism quickly spirals into a complex web of obsession, blurring the dangerous line between a comforting memory and a digital ghost. This "tech-noir" production features a powerhouse all-female cast including Jenny Jamora, Maronne Cruz, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, and Jackie Lou Blanco.

Scene Change returns for its second season with Ang Linangan, a quirky and touching Filipino translation of Davis Alianiello’s play The Farm. The story follows Sasha as she picks up her "weirdo" brother, Tyler, who has just reappeared after leaving a cult in Italy. As they journey down a wintry New England road, the siblings—played by Brian Sy and J-mee Katanyag—navigate the complexities of love, family, and the lingering shadows of Tyler’s past. Directed by Guelan Varela-Luarca, the production explores the deep-seated bonds that pull us back home.

Repertory Philippines opens its 89th Season with REP Unplugged, a series of reimagined staged readings. It features two distinct productions: Private Lives (March 21–22), Noël Coward’s witty 1930s comedy about a divorced couple who accidentally reunite while honeymooning with new spouses; and Sole Survivor (March 28–29), a contemporary satire by Patricia Manuel Go following twins on a ruthless, shoe-obsessed journey from Makati to Manhattan. These intimate performances include interactive elements and post-show discussions.

Bangaw is a gritty Filipino play with music adapted from William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies. Set on a remote island in the Visayas, the story follows a group of high school students stranded after a plane crash. In a world without adults or rules, their attempt to build a self-made community quickly unravels into a descent toward dominance and violence. Written by Gold Villar-Lim and directed by Dudz Teraña, this production by the FEU Theater Guild interrogates leadership, systemic failure, and the fractured world today’s youth inherit, all set against a pulse of traditional and modern Filipino soundscapes.

It runs from March 5 to April 25 at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio, Far Eastern University, Manila. Ticket prices are P100 (FEU Students), P200 (Non-FEU Students), P500 (Regular), and P700 (VIP). Available through the FEU Theater Guild's official channels.

UP Playwrights’ Theatre (DUP) presents Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan, a powerful contemporary work written and directed by Arlo Deguzman. Rooted in the diasporic experience, the production serves as an ode to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), exploring the emotional landscape of those who sacrifice home for the sake of family. Through movement and lyric, the play navigates the quiet struggles of fathers, mothers, and children bearing the weight of separation and the promise of return.

It runs from March 12 to 29 at the IBG-KAL Theater, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Ticket prices range from P550 to P1,000, with special rates available for the UP community and OFWs. Available through Ticket2Me and direct purchase.
