Despite Comeback, Brendan Fraser Admits That He's Unemployed Right Now

Brendan Fraser's Academy Award for Best Actor win at this year's Oscars would complete his comeback. His case was one of the more heartwarming storylines of the past two years. It was a long time coming for the 54-year-old star, who would bag the trophy for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s drama The Whale. He might well just be one of the only actors to come out of the so-called Hollywood blacklist and rejuvenate his career.

“So this is what the multiverse looks like!" a visibly emotional Fraser said in his acceptance speech. “I’m grateful to Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship The Whale... Gentleman, you laid your whale-sized hearts bare so that we could see into your souls like no one else could do. It is my honor to be named alongside you in this category. I want to tell you that only whales can swim at the depth of talent of Hong Chau [fellow nominee].”

His time away from Hollywood was plagued by divorce, his mom's death, health concerns, and an alleged sexual assault. But after removing himself from the spotlight for about a decade, Fraser suddenly became one of the hottest actors in town. Although unfortunately, that hasn't really translated into the kind of roles you'd think an Oscar winner would get.

Speaking to press at the Greenwich International Film Festival, Fraser said that he doesn't have any projects at the moment. “At the moment, I don’t have anything – I’m really being picky right now,” he told People. The star also expressed his support for the Writers Guild of America strike.

Nevertheless, we will be seeing Fraser in Martin Scorsese's upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, which is due pretty soon.
