With Tahanang Pinakamasaya! Saying Goodbye, Eat Bulaga! Wins Again

The noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! stands tall yet again After a year of legal battles with its former producer Television and Production Exponents (TAPE), its rivalry with Tahanang Pinakamasaya is over. TAPE announced the latter will cease broadcasting starting Friday (March 8).

"TAPE, Inc. extends its profound gratitude to its home network, GMA 7, for a long and fruitful partnership," its statement read. "GMA 7's kind consideration and understanding of the company's unwanted circumstances have been instrumental in helping the company in this transition. Despite our best efforts to save the show, both parties have reached a mutual agreement to finally call off the show."

In June 2023, the resignation of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and Eat Bulaga's other mainstays led to an overhaul of the 40-plus year-old show. The show airing on GMA-7 eventually changed its name to Tahanang Pinakamasaya! after a court order sided with the faction with TVJ that moved to rival channel TV5. Most notably, names like Paolo Contis, Kimpoy Feliciano, Glaiza de Castro, Isko Moreno, and Alexa Miro hosted the show  on GMA-7, garnering decent ratings.

It was a turbulent time for TVJ and the programs that audiences have come to love. After moving to TV5 the following month after leaving their production outfit, the comedic trio initially called their show E.A.T. as the interim title of the show.

TAPE originally used Eat Bulaga! and EB for its noontime show. In December 2023, Bureau of Legal Affairs Adjudication Officer Josephine Alon of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines ruled in favor of the trio. TAPE legal counsel Maggie Garduque had floated the idea of appealing the decision, but nothing came of it.

On January 6, 2024, following the promulgation of the decision by the Marikina Regional Trial Court, TVJ Productions, Inc. reverted their noontime variety show's title to Eat Bulaga! Meanwhile, the show that was airing on GMA changed its name to Tahanang Pinakamasaya!

While TVJ has been hosting for over 40 years now, its relationship with TAPE began in 1995, when the organization started producing for them on GMA Network. It was initially produced by Production Specialists Inc., then-owned by the sportscaster Dick Ildefonso and businessman Romeo Jalosjos.

Over the years, it has changed hosts and shifted networks numerous times. During its run, the show has launched pop culture phenomenons, including the EB Babes, the Sex Bomb Dancers, AlDub, and child star Ryza Mae Dizon. It also faced numerous rival shows airing on competing networks; shows like Student Canteen, Lunch Date, Chibugan Na, Salo-Salo Together, 'Sang Linggo nAPO Sila, Magandang Tanghali Bayan, Wowowee, and many others all fell by the wayside, but none could topple the king of noontime. 

After withstanding cross-network rivalries and controversies, TVJ's departure was the end of an era. Management was reportedly keen on restructuring the show without TVJ. Of course, we all know how that turned out.
