Filipino-American Standup Comedian JR de Guzman Is Finally Coming to the Philippines
International standup Filipino comedian JR De Guzman is set to visit his home country and perform for the first time in the Philippines. De Guzman been making a name in the standup comedy scene in San Francisco, California, and was picked up by Comedy Central because of his unique spiels in his brand of stand-up musical comedy.
A lot of his content is about race, culture, and relationships. As a standup comedian, De Guzman gets away with race and gender-related humor. He is never caught in dead air because of his lightning-fast wit and ability to turn any situation with the audience into something funny.
Named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch in 2022, he?is set to?serenade audiences with his songs and amuse them with hilarious anecdotes at The Theatre at Solaire on June 3, 2023 (Saturday) at 7 p.m.
De Guzman has been making a name on the world stage while introducing Filipino culture and conveying his take on racism in his narratives.?He was previously featured in the Netflix special “The Comedy Lineup” and Comedy Central’s “Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City.”
“I just try to tell my personal story. I believe the power of honesty and vulnerability is what allows people to connect with your art,” he said in an interview with?ANCX. “I talk about immigrating here, I make fun of stereotypes, both by breaking them down, but also acknowledging when they’re true.”
“Balancing the line between what’s funny and offensive is definitely something I have to take into account, but I think you build an instinct over time. You find the boundaries by trying new jokes and seeing what works and what bombs. I find that if you go the personal route, it’s easier to not offend someone because you’re sharing your experiences,” De Guzman told Positively Filipino.
