A Painting Was Bought for P200 at a Thrift Shop. It Could Now Sell for P14 Million.

In 2017, a woman bought an old painting at a second-hand shop for $4 (approximately P200). This coming September 19, 2023, the painting bought by the woman will be auctioned and the price may reach $250,000 or a staggering PHP14 million.

The old work was created by one of the famous illustrators in America, N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945). This was confirmed by the well-known auction house in the U.S., Bonhams Skinner, in a recent Boston Globe report.

According to Bonhams, the unnamed woman walked into a thrift store or second-hand shop in Manchester, New Hampshire.

He is looking for an old painting that he can recycle and display at home.

The Wyeth painting was stuck in a pile of "damaged posters and prints," a Bonhams Skinner spokesperson said.

The woman was unaware that the chosen painting was original and drawn by Wyeth in 1939.

This is an illustration of the 1884 novel Ramona by American poet and writer Helen Hunt Jackson.

The woman even joked that she might have bought a real painting.

After purchasing the painting, the woman looked for information online, but found nothing.

Lauren Lewis, an independent conservator in Rockland, Maine, and former curator of N.C.'s works, noticed this. Wyeth at the Farnsworth Museum.

Lauren has extensive knowledge of Wyeth's works, and she also knows the children and grandchildren of the famous American illustrator.

Through connections, Lauren personally saw the purchased painting and said she was "99 percent certain that it was authentic."

The woman was shocked and overwhelmed. Six years since he bought the painting, what he said then came true that it looked like a real painting.

Bonhams Skinner is set to auction the painting itself on September 19.

And its bidding price will range from $150,000 to $250,000 (P8.5 million to P14 million).
