Earlier this week, news of a limited edition Cherry Mobile Duterte Flare J2S circulated on local tech sites. The phone’s packaging bears the President’s face and seal, and is being sold for P5,000 on Shopee. On the other hand, the Flare J2S, which was released last year, typically costs P2,999.

According to Shopee seller tinabau, only 3,000 pieces have been produced. It’s unclear whether the phone itself has been customized in any way, but that hasn’t stopped Reddit users from imagining some hilarious features.

After checking with Cherry Mobile, we've been able to confirm that the Duterte Flare J2S is authentic. However, they've also emphatically stated that it's not for sale to the public, which is probably why it's only available on third-party e-commerce sites.

Executive Order No. 310—which prescribes the use and design of the coat-of-arms, seal, and flag of the President and Vice President of the Philippines—states that the presidential seal may be used for “exceptional historical, educational, or newsworthy purposes as may be authorized in writing by the Office of Presidential Protocol.”

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque has issued the following statement:

"The subject phones were gifts by the Office of the President for the holiday season. These 'limited edition' phones are intended as gifts by the Office of the President and conforms with the designs of similar gift items."

"These phones, however, are not for commercial sale. It is the hope of this Office that the recipients will treat the gifts not as objects for resale but as treasured mementos of a Presidency that cares."

"Further questions on the matter may be referred to the Presidential Spokesperson. Thank you."
