Some days, you just want to find a hidey-hole and get sufficiently soused before braving the Metro traffic and heading home. The usual bars can prove to be too noisy, and often serve the beer crowd, if you know what we mean. Those who are into the emerging cocktail culture in the country are the type would rather nurse their handcrafted drinks in a darkened bar that offers relative peace.

Enter Bank Bar in BGC, with its credo of making the work week a little bit lighter by offering what it promises to be the most extensive range of liquors, spirits, and cocktails in the city. It is a delightfully different take on lounges and bars, with patrons even calling it a speakeasy, because of its hush-hush vibe and the fact that one has to navigate through a hidden passageway of a convenience store that lands guests into a stockroom before it opens up to what looks like an underground cathedral.

Abba Napa, one of the founding partners of Bank Bar’s parent company The Moment Group explains, “I never envisioned Bank Bar to be a speakeasy. It just so happens to be behind a convenience store. We created it out of a desire for us to have a space to go to ourselves. I think at the time we envisioned it, the nightlife scene was dominated by pubs and clubs.  Bars and lounges were uncommon. Today that has changed but I think what makes Bank unique is the atmosphere it provides and how it evolves this throughout the night.” At dusk, it is a space for a reflective pre-dinner Negroni, but later that night, it transforms into a more vibrant club with music spun by the house DJ.

It is during that quiet time, between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. every weekday that they are now offering their Happily Hour After promotion with endless cocktails at P695++ per person. Mixes on the all-you-drink and all-you-can-hold-in menu include daiquiris, mojitos, shochu, and tequila highballs, along with a special Earl Grey martini that can only be found on the happy hour drink list . Also giving you the best bang for your buck are the Money Pours on selected spirits—from gin to scotch— along with glasses of house red and white wines. Teetotalers are also welcome to imbibe with sweetheart concoctions of cucumber or raspberry smashes.

Of course, as any true inebriate knows, one should never drink on an empty stomach, so Bank Bar offers its bar chow as companions to the happy hour revelers. Among the pulutan hits are two new additions to its menu, culled from another Moment Group baby, the restaurant that was formerly known as ‘Cue—Chicken Skin Chicharron (P255) and Baby Squid Calamari (P395).  The Small Plates menu has standout dishes like the salted egg yolk rock shrimp tempura and the addicting Cheech Flores, their take on Chicharon Bulaklak.  Groups can enjoy big plates, loaded with Charcuterie and Formaggio. A fave from the Group’s 8 Cuts makes a special appearance in the form of the ox blend cheeseburger slider

They have a Nitecap menu of Yakisoba, Pork Belly Chahan, and University Fired Rice, in take-away boxes to satisfy late night cravings of midnight patrons, but if you ask really nicely, they might let you order it earlier.

So, if you’ve had a bad day and just want to drink it down or are simply looking for a place to soak in some alcohol in a nice sanctuary, head on to this hidden gem that is listed as one of the World’s Most Intriguing Speakeasies on the CNN website.

Bank Bar is at G/F RCBC Savings Corporate Center, 26th Street, in between 6th and 7th Avenues, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City; open from Monday to Friday (5 p.m. to 2 a.m.) and Saturday (8 p.m. to 3 a.m.). The Happily Hour After promo is on weekdays, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
